Troubleshooting Server Backup Configuration Errors

The Windows Server Backup infrastructure encountered an error that prevented the wizard from retrieving the backup information.

Description

Windows Server Backup infrastructure encountered an error when trying to retrieve backup information.

Solution

Restart the backup configuration wizard. If the behavior continues, check for additional information in the system alerts. For information about reviewing alerts, see Understanding and managing alerts.

Access denied. You do not have permissions to access this resource.

Description

Access was denied when attempting to enumerate files, folders, or hard drives.

Solution

You do not have the required permission to perform this task.

Cannot set up the server backup

Description

Configuring backup on the server was not successful.

Solution

If an error occurs while you are configuring or reconfiguring server backup, make sure that Windows Server Server Backup Service is running on the server.

To start the server backup service

  1. On the server, click Start, and click Administrative Tools, and then click Services.

  2. Scroll down to and click Windows Server Server Backup Service. If the status of the service is not Started, right-click the service, and then click Start.

  3. Close Services.

The system encountered an unexpected error.

Description

The wizard cannot retrieve the backup information from the server.

Solution

Make sure that Windows Server Server Backup Service is running on the server.

To start the server backup service

  1. On the server, click Start, and click Administrative Tools, and then click Services.

  2. Scroll down to and click Windows Server Server Backup Service. If the status of the service is not Started, right-click the service, and then click Start.

  3. Close Services.

An external backup hard drive connected to the server was not found

Description

The backup destination hard drives specified in the backup configuration were not found.

Solution

Ensure that the backup hard drives that you set up are connected to the server, turned on, and working properly.

The server backup engine could not be contacted.

Description

The scheduled backup task may have been deleted from scheduled.

Solution

Rerun the Customize Backup wizard. For information about configuring server backup, see Change backup target drive.

An error prevented the server from configuring the backup policy

Description

One or more hard drives that you want to backup are not available.

Solution

Verify that all hard drives that you want to backup are attached to the server, powered on, and working properly.
