Tip: Understand and Manage Internet Explorer 9 Tracking Protection

Internet Explorer 9 includes a new security feature called Tracking Protection. Heres a quick look at how it works and how you can manage this feature.

When you visit a Web site, some of the content may be provided by a different site. That content can be used to gather information about what sites you visit online.

The new Tracking Protection feature blocks this external site content from sites that are listed on Tracking Protection Lists. Internet Explorer 9 includes a personalized list, which is generated automatically based on the sites you visit. In addition, you can download pre-configured Tracking Protection Lists, which are available from the Internet Explorer Gallery. When you use one of these pre-configured lists, Internet Explorer will periodically check for updates to these lists.

To manage tracking protection, open the Tools menu in Internet Explorer 9 (the gear icon in the upper right corner of the browser window), select Safety, and then Tracking Protection.

This opens the Manage Add-ons window. To enable the Tracking Protection feature, highlight a list and enable it using the Enable button. You can enable and disable tracking lists on a list-by-list basis.

You can manage your personalized list, by highlighting Your Personalized List in the Manage Add-ons window and then selecting Settings For This List. This opens a dialog where you can review sites included in your auto-generated list and choose whether to Allow or Block sites on a site-by-site basis.

Tacking Protection offers a handy tool to prevent third-parties from tracking the online activity of users throughout your organization. So you may want to enforce policies company-wide. Internet Explorer 9 includes the following new Group Policy settings to help you configure and enforce how Tracking Protection is used on systems you manage:
  • Turn off Tracking Protection
  • Tracking Protection threshold
  • Prevent Deleting ActiveX Filtering and Tracking Protection data
