Microsoft Security Bulletin MS10-044 - Critical

Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office Access ActiveX Controls Could Allow Remote Code Execution (982335)

Published: | Updated:

Version: 1.1

General Information

Executive Summary

This security update resolves two privately reported vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office Access ActiveX Controls. The vulnerabilities could allow remote code execution if a user opened a specially crafted Office file or viewed a Web page that instantiated Access ActiveX controls. Users whose accounts are configured to have fewer user rights on the system could be less impacted than users who operate with administrative user rights.

This security update is rated Critical for supported editions of Microsoft Office Access 2003 and Microsoft Office Access 2007. For more information, see the subsection, Affected and Non-Affected Software, in this section.

The update addresses the vulnerabilities by updating specific Access ActiveX controls and by modifying the way memory is accessed by Microsoft Office and by Internet Explorer when loading Access ActiveX controls. For more information about the vulnerability, see the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) subsection for the specific vulnerability entry under the next section, Vulnerability Information.

Recommendation. Microsoft recommends that customers apply the update immediately.

Known Issues. Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 982335 documents the currently known issues that customers may experience when installing this security update. The article also documents recommended solutions for these issues.
