General Information

Executive Summary

This security update resolves publicly disclosed vulnerabilities in Microsoft FAST Search Server 2010 for SharePoint. The vulnerabilities could allow remote code execution in the security context of a user account with a restricted token. FAST Search Server for SharePoint is only affected by this issue when Advanced Filter Pack is enabled. By default, Advanced Filter Pack is disabled.

This security update is rated Important for supported editions of FAST Search Server 2010 for SharePoint. For more information, see the subsection, Affected and Non-Affected Software, in this section.

The security update addresses the vulnerabilities by updating the affected Oracle Outside In libraries to a non-vulnerable version. Recommendation. Customers can configure automatic updating to check online for updates from Microsoft Update by using the Microsoft Update service. Customers who have automatic updating enabled and configured to check online for updates from Microsoft Update typically will not need to take any action because this security update will be downloaded and installed automatically. Customers who have not enabled automatic updating need to check for updates from Microsoft Update and install this update manually. Microsoft FAST Search Server 2010 for SharePoint includes all the search features and integration capabilities of SharePoint Server 2010 and adds deep platform flexibility, scale, and enhanced content processing capabilities. You can deploy FAST Search Server 2010 for SharePoint across multiple servers to meet demanding requirements for redundancy, performance, and capacity. There are multiple vulnerabilities discussed in the Oracle Critical Patch Update Advisory - October 2012. How are the vulnerabilities addressed by this update? 
CVE-2012-3214 and CVE-2012-3217 discussed in the Oracle Critical Patch Update Advisory - October 2012 affect FAST Search Server 2010 for SharePoint and are addressed by this update.

These are vulnerabilities in third-party code, Oracle Outside In libraries. Why is Microsoft issuing a security update? 
Microsoft licenses a custom implementation of the Oracle Outside In libraries, specific to the product in which the third-party code is used. Microsoft is issuing this security update to help ensure that all customers using this third-party code in FAST Search 2010 for SharePoint are protected from these vulnerabilities.

Oracle Outside In Contains Multiple Exploitable Vulnerabilities

Remote code execution vulnerabilities exist in FAST Search Server 2010 for SharePoint with the Advanced Filter Pack enabled. An attacker who succesfully exploited these vulnerabilities could run arbitrary code in the context of a user account with a restricted token. By default, Advanced Filter Pack in FAST is disabled.

Mitigating Factors for Oracle Outside In Contains Multiple Exploitable Vulnerabilities

Mitigation refers to a setting, common configuration, or general best-practice, existing in a default state, that could reduce the severity of exploitation of a vulnerability. The following mitigating factors may be helpful in your situation:

  • FAST Search Server 2010 for SharePoint is only affected by the vulnerabilities if the Advanced Filter Pack feature is enabled. By default, the Advanced Filter Pack feature is disabled.

  • Disable the Advanced Filter Pack for FAST Search Server 2010 for SharePoint

    On the FAST Search Server 2010 for SharePoint administration server (or single server), perform these steps:

    1. On the Start menu, click All Programs.

    2. Click Microsoft FAST Search Server 2010 for SharePoint.

    3. Right-click Microsoft FAST Search Server 2010 for SharePoint shell and select Run as administrator.

    4. At the command prompt, browse to installer\scripts under the installation folder.

    5. Type the following command:

      .\AdvancedFilterPack.ps1 -disable

What is the scope of the vulnerabilities? 
These are remote code execution vulnerabilities.

What causes the vulnerabilities? 
The vulnerabilities exist in the way that the Oracle Outside In libraries, used by the Advanced Filter Pack, parse specially crafted files.

What is the Advanced Filter Pack? 
Advanced Filter Pack is a FAST Search Server 2010 for SharePoint feature that enables text and metadata extraction from several hundred file formats, complementing the document formats that are supported by the Microsoft Filter Pack. By default, the Advanced Filter Pack feature is disabled in FAST Search Server 2010 for SharePoint.

What are the Oracle Outside In libraries? 
The Oracle Outside In libraries are used by the filter pack in the server backend to support the text and metadata extraction of files supported by the Advanced Filter Pack. Microsoft licenses these libraries from Oracle.

What might an attacker use these vulnerabilities to do? 
An attacker who successfully exploited these vulnerabilities could run arbitrary code in the context of a user account with a restricted token.

How could an attacker exploit these vulnerabilities? 
To exploit these vulnerabilities, an attacker would need access to a file location that FAST Search 2010 for SharePoint indexes, and have the ability to upload a specially crafted file to that location.

What systems are primarily at risk from the vulnerabilities? 
FAST Search 2010 for SharePoint servers with the Advanced Filter Pack installed that index sources with untrusted files.

Installing the Update

You can install the update from the appropriate download link in the Affected and Non-Affected Software section. If you installed your application from a server location, the server administrator must instead update the server location with the administrative update and deploy that update to your system. This security update supports the following setup switches.

/passive Specifies passive mode. Requires no user interaction; users see basic progress dialogs but cannot cancel.
/quiet Specifies quiet mode, or suppresses prompts, when files are being extracted.
/norestart Suppresses restarting the system if the update requires a restart.
/forcerestart Automatically restarts the system after applying the update, regardless of whether the update requires the restart.
/extract Extracts the files without installing them. You are prompted for a target folder.
/extract:<path> Overrides the install command that is defined by author. Specifies the path and name of the Setup.inf or .exe file.
