Security Bulletin
Published: July 09, 2013 | Updated: August 27, 2013
Version: 3.0
This security update resolves a privately reported vulnerability in Microsoft Windows. The vulnerability could allow remote code execution if a user opens a specially crafted media file. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could gain the same user rights as the local user. Users whose accounts are configured to have fewer user rights on the system could be less impacted than users who operate with administrative user rights.
This security update is rated Critical for all supported releases of Windows, excluding Itanium-based editions of Windows servers. For more information, see the subsection, Affected and Non-Affected Software, in this section.
The security update addresses the vulnerability by modifying how Windows Media Player opens certain media files. For more information about the vulnerability, see the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) subsection for the specific vulnerability entry under the next section, Vulnerability Information.
Recommendation. Most customers have automatic updating enabled and will not need to take any action because this security update will be downloaded and installed automatically. Customers who have not enabled automatic updating need to check for updates and install this update manually. For information about specific configuration options in automatic updating, see Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 294871.
For administrators and enterprise installations, or end users who want to install this security update manually, Microsoft recommends that customers apply the update immediately using update management software, or by checking for updates using the Microsoft Update service.

A remote code execution vulnerability exists in the way Windows Media Format Runtime handles certain media files. This vulnerability could allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code if the attacker convinces a user to open a specially crafted media file. An attacker could then install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full user rights.
To view this vulnerability as a standard entry in the Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures list, see CVE-2013-3127.
Mitigation refers to a setting, common configuration, or general best-practice, existing in a default state, that could reduce the severity of exploitation of a vulnerability. The following mitigating factors may be helpful in your situation:
Workaround refers to a setting or configuration change that does not correct the underlying vulnerability but would help block known attack vectors before you apply the update. Microsoft has tested the following workarounds and states in the discussion whether a workaround reduces functionality:
Restrict access to the WMV codec using an interactive, managed script
On Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 (32-bit systems):
Run the following command from an elevated command prompt:
cacls %windir%\System32\Wmvdecod.dll /E /P everyone:N
On Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 (64-bit systems):
Run the following commands from an elevated command prompt:
cacls %windir%\System32\Wmvdecod.dll /E /P everyone:N
cacls %windir%\sysWOW64\Wmvdecod.dll /E /P everyone:N`
On Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 (32-bit systems):
Run the following commands from an elevated command prompt:
takeown /f %windir%\System32\Wmvdecod.dll
icacls %windir%\System32\Wmvdecod.dll /save %TEMP%\FILENAME_ACL.TXT
icacls %windir%\System32\Wmvdecod.dll /deny everyone:(F)`
On Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 (64-bit systems):
Run the following commands from an elevated command prompt:
takeown /f %windir%\System32\Wmvdecod.dll
icacls %windir%\System32\Wmvdecod.dll /save %TEMP%\FILENAME_ACL.TXT
icacls %windir%\System32\Wmvdecod.dll /deny everyone:(F)
takeown /f %windir%\sysWOW64\Wmvdecod.dll
icacls %windir%\SysWOW64\Wmvdecod.dll /save %TEMP%\FILENAME_ACL.TXT
icacls %windir%\SysWOW64\Wmvdecod.dll /deny everyone:(F)
Impact of workaround. After performing these steps, applications that use the WMV codec will not be able to play content.
Disable the WMV codec using an interactive, managed script
Disabling the WMV codec will help protect the affected system from attempts to exploit this vulnerability.
Note Roll-back not supported in Windows XP.
Warning If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
To disable the WMV codec, perform the following steps:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{82d353df-90bd-4382-8bc2-3f6192b76e34}]
[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Wow6432Node\CLSID\{82d353df-90bd-4382-8bc2-3f6192b76e34}]
Impact of workaround. WMV-encoded files will not play.
How to undo the workaround.
To undo the workaround:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

What is the scope of the vulnerability?
This is a remote code execution vulnerability. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could take complete control of an affected system. An attacker could then install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full user rights.
What causes the vulnerability?
This vulnerability is caused when Windows Media Player fails to properly parse specially crafted media files.
What is Windows Media Player?
Windows Media Player is a feature of the Windows operating system for personal computers. It is used for playing audio and video.
How do I determine which version of Windows Media Player is installed on my system?
For instructions on how to determine the version of Windows Media Player that is installed on a system, see Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 190990.
What might an attacker use the vulnerability to do?
An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could run arbitrary code as the logged-on user. An attacker could then install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full user rights. If a user is logged-on with administrative user rights, an attacker could take complete control of the affected system. Users whose accounts are configured to have fewer user rights on the system could be less impacted than users who operate with administrative user rights.
How could an attacker exploit the vulnerability?
An attacker could exploit the vulnerability by hosting a specially crafted media file on a network location and convincing a user to open the file. An attacker would have no way to force users to open the file. Instead, an attacker would have to convince users to do so, typically by getting them to click a link in an email message or Instant Messenger message.
What systems are primarily at risk from the vulnerability?
Systems, most typically workstations, that use Windows Media Player are primarily at risk from the vulnerability.
