Installer with Installer Step-up Utility

Updated: June 29, 2007

With Microsoft® Systems Management Server, organizations can reduce administrative overhead by automating distribution and installation of any 16-bit or 32-bit application or operating system. Many software applications need manual intervention during installation, making them poorly suited for electronic software distribution. Systems Management Server Installer eliminates the need for manual intervention.

Note: This download is available for the Intel platform only.

What Systems Management Server Installer Does

The Systems Management Server Installer features an Installation Expert that repackages one or more software applications into a single package for Systems Management Server to distribute and install automatically. The Installation Expert automatically creates the instructions and event-generation scripts that Systems Management Server uses to deploy software, install applications, and monitor the installation process.

Windows Installer Step-up Utility

Systems Management Server Installer includes the Windows Installer Step-up Utility (ISU). ISU includes a command-line tool that migrates setup packages from the Systems Management Server Installer format to the Microsoft Windows Installer format, resulting in a Windows Installer setup package with an .msi file name extension. The setup package can be run on computers that support the Windows Installer service.

Systems Management Server Installer also supports previous versions of Systems Management Server Installer scripts and packages. This download also includes a command-line feature (Isu.exe) that you can use to convert executables to Windows Installer packages. You can distribute the .msi packages created by Systems Management Server Installer using Windows 2000 group policy; the packages support Windows Installer advertisements and repair features as well.

Key Features

SMS Installer with Installer Step-up Utility

FeatureDescription
Installation RepackagingYou can combine one or more existing application installations into a single self-extracting package, suitable for automated distribution by Systems Management Server. As Systems Management Server deploys this package, it automatically detects and uses local computer configuration settings. Built-in intelligence also ensures that only required files are deployed on each computer.
Software Updating CapabilitiesSoftware updating can greatly reduce the size of distributed files as only the actual file changes are incorporated into the installation.
SecurityYou can digitally sign all repackaged software to confirm the legitimacy of its origin.
Test Run & Uninstall SupportYou can test an installation before deploying it by running Installer-generated files in test mode. If for any reason the actual rollout needs to be recalled, computers can be restored to the same state they were in before the distributed software was installed.
Extract SupportYou can extract executable files created with previous versions of Systems Management Server Installer without needing a reference computer to build the package.
Convert SupportYou can convert executable files created with previous versions of Systems Management Server Installer to Windows Installer (MSI) format.
Compile As .msi SupportYou can compile a Windows Installer package (.msi) directly from the Systems Management Server Installer console.

The self-extracting executable file on this page contains a 32-bit version of Microsoft Systems Management Server Installer. To install this tool, run the 32-bit self-extracting executable (.exe) file on a Systems Management Server 2.0 or Systems Management Server 2003 primary site server.

After Installer verifies that your computer is a Systems Management Server site server, it then copies the installation files to the selected directory (by default, the SMS Installer Files directory).

Note: The Systems Management Server Installer with Installer Step-up:

  • Is not supported on Systems Management Server 1.2.
