Wenming Ye is an Evangelist for High Performance Computing, and showed how HPC clusters can be extended to include nodes that exist as Azure instances.
For certain types of HPC workload that aren't heavily dependent on high speed communication between nodes, Azure is a great solution - it allows you to just pay for the Azure processing you use, when you need it.
Wenming showed how an HPC application for simulating wind tunnel results could then use nodes in Azure to render the results as a video.
