The OneLab Initiative: Building Environmentally Sustainable Development Labs
The Onelab initiative is a partnership between Microsoft IT and other groups within Microsoft to create a better paradigm for Research and Development Labs for product groups. The first, major milestone of this cross- team initiative is creation of a state-of-the-art, green facility to support the research and development efforts of product groups within the company. Redmond Ridge is Microsoft’s first purpose-built Research and Development Lab facility specifically designed to consolidate computer labs from the main, Redmond campus, and house servers used in the development and testing of its software products. When loaded to full capacity, Redmond Ridge 1 will reduce both Microsoft’s operational energy use and costs, while also helping to deliver an overall carbon savings of 12,000 metric tons per year.
