Overview

Robust administrative controls for managing storage and Web infrastructure give IT departments a cost-effective way to implement and manage a high-performance collaboration environment. With a familiar, Web-based interface and close integration with everyday tools including the Microsoft Office system, Windows SharePoint Services is easy to use and can be deployed rapidly.

| • | Installation and upgrade considerations: Before installing or upgrading Windows SharePoint Services, see the system requirements. Instructions and special considerations for installation and upgrades are available in the Windows SharePoint Services Technical Library. Please review these documents before proceeding. Note: Installing Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 over any beta or trial edition of Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 is not supported. |
| • | Installation with Search Server 2008 Express: If you anticipate a need for searching content across Windows SharePoint Services sites, Search Server 2008 Express can be used to provide search capabilities across Windows SharePoint Services sites as well as file shares, Exchange Public Folders, and Web sites. Please review the Search Server 2008 Express information for more details. |
| • | Installation over Windows Small Business Server: If you will be installing Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 on any Windows Small Business Server machine, please read the Installing Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 on a Server Running Windows Small Business Server 2003 white paper. There are important installation steps and procedures that must be followed to ensure a successful deployment. Caution: If you do not follow the instructions in this white paper, your configuration of Windows Small Business Server 2003 and Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 might not work or might not be supported. |
| • | Existing Web applications: If Windows SharePoint Services is to be installed on a server that is already running another Web application, some additional post-installation steps are necessary. Please refer to Microsoft Knowledge Base Article KB823265 for more information. |
| • | IIS security modifications: If Windows SharePoint Services is to be installed on a server that requires Kerberos authentication, additional steps are necessary. Please refer to Microsoft Knowledge Base Article KB832769 for more information. |
| • | Licensing: Windows SharePoint Services is provided as part of the Windows Server 2003 operating system and Windows licensing terms apply to its use.
