Translation Wiki Overview

The Translation Wiki enables you to edit individual sentences to improve the quality of translated text. Your suggestions will be reviewed by a moderator and published. If approved, it will be propagated by the site to all instances in which the sentence is used.

You can contribute to the Translation Wiki only from Classic view. To switch to Classic view:

  • If you are in Lightweight view, click Preferences in the upper-right corner of the window, and then choose Classic.
  • If you are in ScriptFree view, click Classic in the upper-right corner of the window.

Another method of Community contributions in Library documentations is Community Content editing.  Many of the machine translated documentations do allow for Community Content editing at the bottom of the page as well. Community Contents editing area can be used to add new annotations whereas the Translation Wiki feature is to improve the translation of existing sentences.

What is Translation Wiki?

Translation Wiki is an editor feature allowing for users to add translation suggestions to improve the quality of translations at sentence level.

Where is Translation Wiki available?

Translation Wiki feature is available on most of the contents prepared using the Machine Translation technology. Current available language under MSDN Library is Portuguese Brazilian.

Is Translation Wiki available on all machine Translated contents?

Most of the machine translated contents do allow edits. You will notice at the top of the page an indication that the content is editable. Also available are “Edit” buttons when hovering over sentences if the page is editable.

What mechanism is used for machine translation?

The documentations are prepared using Machine translation technology by Microsoft®Research  (MSR). The same technology is available on the live site https://www.windowslivetranslator.com/.

Who can contribute to Translation Wiki edits?

Anyone who has registered and signed in using a Microsoft Passport or Windows Live ID and agreed to the site terms of use and the participant Code of Conduct can participate in edits.

How do I edit the content?

Editing (i.e. providing translation suggestions) is available at each individual sentence.

Hover over a sentence in the translated language pane and a link “editing” appears. Click on the Edit button to open the editor or double click on any sentences on the translated pane to open the editor.

Can I edit the entire contents of this page?

Selected sections of content are not editable where translation suggestions would not add value or would break consistency between linked topics. For example the topic title, syntax blocks, code examples, hyper links may not be editable depending on the content.

How can I tell if some has already provided sentence suggestion?

Highlighted sentences in green indicate that there are pending suggestions provided by users.

Opening the editor will list out all of the suggestions provided for the particular sentence under “Pending suggestion”

How can I add new content to page?

Translation Wiki feature is targeted to improving the translation quality of provided content. To add new content to the page use the Community Content feature available at the bottom of pages instead of Translation Wiki. See Community Content FAQ.
