Isolating the Causes of the Degraded Performance

After you identify the symptoms of poor performance in your Microsoft Exchange environment, you need to determine the cause or causes of the observed symptoms. The typical issues that negatively affect Exchange performance include:

  • Third-party or support applications
  • High utilization of disk space
  • Insufficient disk spindles
  • High utilization of memory
  • High item counts in single folders
  • Contention for processor time
  • Network configuration or deployment
  • Poor access to global catalogs in Active Directory directory service
