Understanding Exchange 2007 Version and Build Numbers

Última modificación del tema: 2007-08-13

When you look at the version and build numbers of Exchange servers in your Exchange organization, you may be confused by what you see.

The RTM build of Exchange Server 2007 is 685.25. When you view the Exchange version information in the Windows registry, the version appears as 685.25. However, the Exchange Management Console reports that the build is 685.24. This is the expected result even though the Exchange 2007 RTM build is 685.25. An exception to this version mismatch issue is present on the Edge Transport server, which will always display only 685.25 for the version. As a result, when you look at multiple Exchange servers in the Exchange Management Console that include one or more synchronized Edge Transport servers, the Version column will show both 685.24 (for non-Edge Transport servers) and 685.25 (for Edge Transport servers). Additionally, when you click Help on the Exchange 2007 management console, you will see a different version number altogether (685.018). This is consistent on all Exchange 2007 servers.

For example, when you use the Exchange Management Console to look at version and build information, the management console may display "Version 8.0 (Build 685.24)". The same result is displayed if you run this Exchange Management Shell cmdlet: Get-ExchangeServer -Identity ServerName | fl AdminDisplayVersion. However, if you run the cmdlet Get-ExchangeServer -Identity <ServerName> | fl ExchangeVersion, the result is "0.1 (8.0.535.0)".

The ExchangeVersion attribute does not refer to the version of Exchange that is running on the server. Instead, it is the minimum version of Exchange that is able to read the specific object. In this case, 8.0.535.0 can read this object; for example, the last changes to the schema of this object were made in build 535. To learn which version of Exchange is currently installed, you should check the value of the AdminDisplayVersion attribute, not the value of the ExchangeVersion attribute.
