Appendix B: Configuring Windows Firewall Settings for Windows XP

Windows XP SP2 offers several ways to configure Windows Firewall: By using Group Policy settings, by editing the Netfw.inf or Unattend.txt file prior to deployment, by writing scripts that call the Netsh command, and manually by using the Windows Firewall control panel tool.

For information on configuring Windows Firewall using Group Policy settings, see the Microsoft TechNet document, “Deploying Windows Firewall Settings for Microsoft Windows XP with Service Pack 2: Deploying Windows Firewall Settings With Group Policy,” at https://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/deploy/depfwset/wfsp2wgp.mspx.

For instructions on configuring the firewall settings in the Unattend.txt file, read the Microsoft TechNet document, “Deploying Windows Firewall Settings for Microsoft Windows XP with Service Pack 2: Appendix E: Example of Using the Unattend.txt File,” at https://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/deploy/depfwset/wfsp2ape.mspx.

For instructions on configuring the firewall settings during an interactive install using the Netfw.inf file, see Using the Windows Firewall INF File in Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 at https://download.microsoft.com/download/6/e/f/6efdbda6-ca9e-4122-9787-3fd7ca7d7f33/WFINF_Guide.doc.

For information on configuring Windows Firewall using a script or batch file, read the Microsoft TechNet document, “Deploying Windows Firewall Settings for Microsoft Windows XP with Service Pack 2: Appendix B: Netsh Command Syntax for the Netsh Firewall Context,” at https://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/deploy/depfwset/wfsp2apb.mspx.

For instructions on configuring Windows Firewall manually on a single computer, read the Microsoft TechNet document, “How to Configure Windows Firewall on a Single Computer,” at https://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/smallbusiness/prodtech/windowsxp/cfgfwall.mspx. This knowledge can be useful when configuring a master image.
