Deploying

Figure 7 provides the detailed task breakdown for the Deploying Phase.

Testing during the Deploying Phase focuses on one or two test types. Once again, each test type improves with the application of corrective actions identified in the previous type. The core focus must be on finalized operating system images and software packages:

  • Staging test

  • Pilot and production test

The staging test is optional but useful, because it includes an end-to-end implementation scenario. This test is implemented by the various teams responsible for either the pilot or production deployment, or both. The Test feature team is less active during this phase, because all planned integration testing has already been completed during the Stabilizing Phase.

The Test feature team can assist during solution deployment by addressing problems discovered in the production environment. The team can respond by:

  • Reviewing the test cases and results to determine whether a similar situation was encountered earlier and advising as needed.

  • Assisting the various feature teams with unit and integration testing should any test failures warrant redevelopment.

In addition, the Test feature team can provide support to the Deployment feature team during pilot testing, ensuring that proper verifications are performed on the crucial components of this Deploying Phase, including training, communications, and support. Results of these tests must be collated and reviewed by the Test feature team to ensure that all processes meet expected results for the production deployment. Final modifications to the deployment approach must be performed based on these findings. The Test feature team must perform a final quality assurance (QA) sign-off before production deployment begins.

Roles and Responsibilities

All six role clusters from the MSF Team Model play a role in the Deploying Phase of the initiative. Table 8 lists those roles and defines the focus areas for each role cluster.

For more information about MSF Role Clusters, see Microsoft Solutions Framework at https://www.microsoft.com/technet/itsolutions/msf/default.mspx.

Milestone: Final QA Sign-off

Milestones are synchronization points for the overall solution. For more information, see the Plan, Build, and Deploy Guide. At this milestone, shown in Table 9, all tests are complete.

Description

QA Sign-off

This document outlines all the components and findings of the Test feature team during this phase. The document also indicates the state of the deployed solution and maps it back to the original functional feature set the Development feature team selected.
