Introduction
This guide contains detailed information about how to deploy Windows XP Professional, Windows XP Tablet PC Edition, Windows Vista Editions, and the 2007 Office system using BDD 2007. The document shows how the automated deployment process should be run to successfully replace previous Windows operating systems with Windows XP.
Note In BDD 2007, the ZTI and LTI processes use a common set of scripts.
This process takes advantage of and combines the results of the other processes in BDD 2007 to accomplish the following tasks:
Collect hardware and software inventory information by using SMS 2003 with Service Pack 2 (SP2).
Migrate existing user profile information by using USMT version 3.0.
Configure Windows DS to start the Windows PE environment.
Install a Windows Vista, Windows XP Professional, or Windows XP Tablet PC Edition operating-system image on target computers automatically by using the SMS OSD Feature Pack and the deployments scripts for ZTI.
Monitor the deployment process by using Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM) 2005 and Zero Touch Installation Management Pack.
Optionally, copy existing user data and preferences from the target computer to a network deployment server.
Optionally, create a backup image of the user computer to a network deployment server.
Optionally, repartition and format the existing primary hard drive (New Computer and Replace Computer scenarios).
Caution BDD 2007 provides out-of-the-box support for partitioning and formatting the entire hard disk in New Computer scenarios. While editing the ZTIdiskpart.txt script to create multiple partitions is possible, doing so has downstream consequences that must be tested for.
Install a Windows Vista, Windows XP Professional, or Windows XP Tablet PC Edition operating-system image that includes applications such as Microsoft Office 2003 or the 2007 Office system.
Dynamically install applications that are specific to the target computer model, such as DVD software.
Automatically install previously packaged software specific to the user of the target computer.
Optionally, restore the user data and preferences that were previously stored on the network deployment server.
In addition, this process provides guidance on deciding where to place deployment servers and other planning information.

Prerequisites
Installing, configuring, and using this process for deploying Windows Vista or Windows XP operating systems require personnel who understand and meet certain prerequisites. Those who execute this deployment process should be familiar with the following concepts:
USMT 3.0
SMS 2003 with SP2
SMS OSD Feature Pack
MOM 2005
Windows DS
Microsoft Windows Server® 2003 with SP1 or later
Windows PE 2.0, supplied with Windows Vista for Windows Vista deployments
Windows PE 1.5, supplied with the SMS OSD Feature Pack for Windows XP deployments
Application Compatibility Toolkit (ACT) version 5.0
CD image creation
Network infrastructure, including routers, switches, and firewalls
Networking services infrastructure, including Domain Name System (DNS), Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP), Windows Internet Naming Service (WINS), and remote access
Microsoft Active Directory® directory service infrastructure, including logical and physical design of infrastructure
Server capacity planning
Target computer image creation
Automated application installation
Note The task sequencer used in BDD 2007 deployments requires the "Create Global Object" right to be assigned to credentials used in running Deployment Workbench and the deployment process. This right is normally available to accounts with administrative level permissions (unless explicitly removed). Also, the Specialized Security – Limited Functionality (SSLF) security profile removes the “Create Global Object” right and should not be applied to computers being deployed by using BDD 2007.
