Quick-Start Guide and Checklist

This section provides a detailed overview of the deployment process. Team members should use this information to help identify the steps of the deployment process for which they do not miss critical steps.

Planning Phase

The primary focus in this phase is to select the appropriate deployment scenarios and methods, ensure that the required infrastructure exists, determine the appropriate processing rules and the monitoring plan, and train team members.

High-level steps in the deployment Planning Phase

SE_SqrBullet01

Select the appropriate deployment scenarios.

The environment typically requires more than one deployment scenario. The team must determine which combination of the deployment scenarios the environment will use (including the New Computer, Upgrade Computer, Refresh Computer, and Replace Computer scenarios).

SE_SqrBullet01

Select the deployment methods.

Determine which target computers in the environment can be deployed by using LTI or ZTI. The environment can use one or both of these methods.

SE_SqrBullet01

Ensure that the required infrastructure exists.

Unless the appropriate infrastructure exists, the team cannot use BDD 2007 to deploy computers. Ensure that the appropriate infrastructure exists before beginning deployment.

SE_SqrBullet01

Determine the appropriate processing rules.

Before using ZTI or LTI to deploy computers, configure the processing rules. The processing rules help determine which operating system images are deployed and their configuration settings.

SE_SqrBullet01

Determine the monitoring plan.

As team members are deploying the target operating system in the test and production environments, they should monitor the progress of the deployment. In addition to using Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 (in the case of ZTI), the team can use Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM) 2005 and the BDD 2007 Management Pack for MOM 2005.

SE_SqrBullet01

Train the team members.

Before beginning deployment in the test and production environments, ensure that all team members are properly trained. This helps the team through the entire deployment process to deploy, manage, operate, troubleshoot, and support the target computers.

Developing Phase

The following checklist describes the high-level steps in the deployment Developing Phase.

SE_SqrBullet01

Prepare the deployment environment.

For both ZTI and LTI, create at least one deployment point by using Deployment Workbench. For ZTI, install the SMS Operating System Deployment (OSD) Feature Pack and any additional support files.

SE_SqrBullet01

Prepare the Windows DS server.

For both ZTI and LTI, the team must prepare the server running Microsoft Windows Deployment Services (Windows DS) to deploy the Microsoft Windows Preinstallation Environment (Windows PE) and target operating system images. ZTI uses Windows DS to initiate Windows PE in the ZTI process. LTI uses Windows DS to initiate Windows PE or the target operating system.

SE_SqrBullet01

Configure the appropriate resource access.

The accounts used by the deployment scripts, SMS 2003 clients, SMS OSD Feature Pack, and other components require access to various resources. Before using ZTI or LTI to deploy operating systems, ensure that these accounts have the appropriate permissions to the required resources.

SE_SqrBullet01

Configure the operating system and Windows PE images.

For both ZTI and LTI, configure the operating system and Windows PE images. For ZTI, these steps are done through Deployment Workbench, the SMS OSD Feature Pack, and manual steps. For LTI, these steps are done through Deployment Workbench and manual steps.

SE_SqrBullet01

Configure the processing rules.

During the Planning Phase of the deployment process, the team determined the processing rules to be used in determining the appropriate operating system images and settings to deploy. Customize the Customsettings.ini files with those settings, and then update the operating system images created earlier in the process.

Stabilizing Phase

The following checklist describes the high-level steps in the deployment Stabilizing Phase.

SE_SqrBullet01

Perform lab tests and pilot deployments.

Prior to deploying into the production environment, verify the deployment process in test labs and by conducting pilot deployments. These tests and pilot deployments help identify any problems before deploying in the production network.

SE_SqrBullet01

Prepare deployment teams.

After the lab tests and pilot deployments are complete, prepare the deployment teams. The deployment teams must know what was learned during the lab tests and pilot deployments.

Deploying Phase

The following checklist describes the high-level steps in the deployment Deploying Phase.

SE_SqrBullet01

Run the Deployment Wizard.

After the deployment infrastructure exists, the team is ready to deploy the target operating systems to the target computers. Initiate the installation process for each target computer, and monitor the progress.
