Quick-Start Guide and Checklist

The following quick-start guide provides an overview of the process for using the DCM solution. Desired Configuration Monitoring feature team members use this guide to help identify the steps for using the DCM solution for which they need additional information and to skip the steps with which they are already familiar.

Planning Phase

The primary emphasis of the development team during the Planning Phase is to configure the lab environment and make it operational, install the DCM Authoring Tool, and ensure that the BDD 2007 servers and sample clients are installed.

Identify configuration items.

CIs are used to represent the different settings to be monitored in a DCM solution. The Desired Configuration Monitoring feature team will most likely have a set of CI files used to monitor the deployment servers and another set of CI files used to monitor the deployed computers.

Monitor deployment servers.

The Desired Configuration Monitoring feature team should create different CIs based on the type of deployment server (or servers) to be used. Microsoft System Management Server (SMS), Microsoft Windows Deployment Services (Windows DS), and Remote Installation Services (RIS) are the main deployment technologies that BDD 2007 uses.

Monitor deployed computers.

The Desired Configuration Monitoring feature team should create different CIs for the different groups of computers deployed throughout the BDD 2007 project.

Verify the solution infrastructure.

When the Desired Configuration Monitoring feature team has identified the different CIs and corresponding settings, team members must ensure that the required infrastructure is available for developing and deploying the CIs.

Developing Phase

The following checklist describes the high-level steps in the Developing Phase.

Install server components.

DCM uses SMS, Microsoft SQL Serverâ„¢ 2000 or 2005 Reporting Services (SQL Server Reporting Services), and (optionally) Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM) to monitor CIs. These components must be installed and configured in the test lab to ensure that CIs are correctly created and tested.

Install client components.

The Desired Configuration Monitoring feature team uses the DCM authoring tool to create CIs in the Developing Phase and the DCM engine to test CIs in the Developing and Stabilizing Phases.

Create CIs.

When the tools are installed, developers can start to create CIs based on the settings identified in the Planning Phase.
