About the staging database

Actualizado: 2009-04-30

The staging database is a separate data cache (storage area) that provides business users in Planning Business Modeler with continuous access to application data. Their access continues even when data is being imported from the various external sources and prepared for loading. This minimizes the downtime that users experience during data loading or data refreshing.

Planning Server provides the following functionality for the staging and application databases.

  • Creating a staging database that is located on the same server as the application database.

  • Synchronizing the structure and data from the application database to the staging database for dimensions, hierarchies, and measure groups.

  • Label-based table conversion support for data preparation.

  • Validating the dimensions and hierarchies.

  • Validating measure groups and annotations.

  • Loading individual dimensions and related hierarchies from the staging database to the application database.

  • Loading measure groups and annotations on a model basis from the staging database to the application database.

  • Refreshing a staging database by using the Herramienta de comando de planeación to make sure that stored procedures and functions for the staging database are compatible with the current version that is on the computer that is running Planning Server.

Nota

Unexpected results may occur if you use a staging database from a previous release,

The structure of the staging database changes after synchronization. The staging database structure is derived from the application database after you complete the tasks for Step 2: Synchronizing the staging database. To learn more about the structure see About the structure of the staging database.
