Typical

Specifies that a predefined set of authentication methods and encryption requirements are negotiated with the server during a PPP exchange. If you select this option, you can view the settings by clicking Advanced (custom settings), and then clicking Settings.

Verify my identity as follows

Lists the available identity authentication settings that you can use.

Require data encryption

Specifies whether to require the use of data encryption. If you select this option, and data encryption is not used by the connecting server, the connection disconnects. If you do not select this option, encryption is attempted, but the connection is made even if encryption is not used. If you want to prevent encryption, click Advanced (custom settings), click Settings, and in Data encryption, click No encryption allowed (disconnect if server requires encryption).

Advanced

Specifies that authentication methods and encryption requirements are individually enabled, configured, and disabled. This requires a knowledge of security protocols.

If you select this option, you can view the settings by clicking Advanced (custom settings), and then clicking Settings. If you click Advanced (custom settings), and then you click Typical (recommended settings), authentication and encryption settings are reset to their default values.
