ADAM ADSI Edit

ADAM ADSI Edit runs as a Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in. To start ADAM ADSI Edit, click Start, point to All Programs, point to ADAM, and then click ADAM ADSI Edit.

The following sections describe user interface (UI) options in the ADAM ADSI Edit snap-in, depending on the node that you click in the console tree or the command that you click in the Action menu.

ADAM ADSI Edit Node

To view the following UI options, in the console tree, click ADAM ADSI Edit, and then, on the Action menu, click:

Connect to

The following dialog box appears:

Connection Settings

You can use the following options in the Connection Settings dialog box to create a connection to a directory partition on an ADAM instance:

Connection name. Type a display name for the connection. The connection will be listed in the console tree using the connection name that you provide.

Server name. The computer name, or DNS host name, of the ADAM instance to which you want to connect.

Port. The Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) communications port number in use by the ADAM instance to which you want to connect. The default LDAP port is 389.

Note

ADAM ADSI Edit does not support Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) connections.

Distinguished name (DN) or naming context. Click this option if you want to specify the distinguished name of the directory partition to which you want to connect.

Well-known naming context. Click this option if you want to connect to one of the well-known naming contexts, which include Configuration, RootDSE, and Schema.

The account of the currently logged on user. Click this option if you want to connect to the ADAM instance using the security context of the account that you are currently using.

This account. Click this option if you want to specify a different account to use when connecting to the ADAM instance.

Refresh

Updates the information about connections and objects that is displayed in ADAM ADSI Edit.

Connection node

To view the following commands, in the console tree, click a connection node for an already established connection, and then, on the Action menu, click:

Remove

Removes the currently selected connection node from ADAM ADSI Edit. This command only affects the contents of the ADAM ADSI Edit console tree; the command does not delete any objects from the ADAM instance.

Update Schema Now

Reloads the schema information from ADAM into the cache of the local computer.

New

Creates a new query when you point to New and then click Query.

Refresh

Updates the information about connections and objects that is displayed in ADAM ADSI Edit.

Object node

To view the following commands, in the console tree, click a directory object in a directory partition in an ADAM instance, and then, on the Action menu, click:

Move

Moves the object to another container in ADAM. Opens a dialog box that you can use to select the destination container.

New Connection from Here

Creates a new connection and adds the new connection to the console tree.

New

Creates a new child object in the selected container when you point to New and then click Object. Opens a set of chained dialog boxes that begins with the class of the object. If you do not have permission to create an object in the selected container, no classes are listed. After a class is selected, a dialog box opens for each required attribute. In the final dialog box, click More to view and edit any optional attributes.

Delete

Deletes the selected object from ADAM. A dialog box appears asking you to confirm the deletion. This command does not appear in the menu if you do not have permissions to delete the object from ADAM.

Rename

Changes the name of the object in ADAM.

Refresh

Updates the information that is displayed in ADAM ADSI Edit about connections and objects.

Properties

Opens a dialog box in which you can edit the attribute values of an object.

Reset Password

This option is available only for objects that contain a unicodePwd attribute. This option provides a dialog box in which the value of the unicodePwd attribute can be reset.
