Requesting a New Server Certificate from an Online CA

Updated: August 22, 2005

Applies To: Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2003 R2, Windows Server 2003 with SP1

You can use the Web Server Certificate Wizard, available through IIS Manager, to request a new server certificate that will be installed immediately by an online CA.

ImportantImportant
You must be a member of the Administrators group on the local computer to perform the following procedure or procedures. As a security best practice, log on to your computer by using an account that is not in the Administrators group, and then use the runas command to run IIS Manager as an administrator. At a command prompt, type runas /user:Administrative_AccountName "mmc systemroot\system32\inetsrv\iis.msc".

Procedures

To request a new server certificate from an online CA
  1. In IIS Manager, double-click the local computer, and then double-click the Web Sites folder.

  2. Right-click the Web site or file for which you want to request a certificate, and then click Properties.

  3. On the Directory Security or File Security tab, under Secure communications, click Server Certificate.

  4. In the Web Server Certificate Wizard, click Create a new certificate.

  5. On the Delayed or Immediate Request wizard page, select Send the request immediately to an online certification authority.

  6. Complete the rest of the steps in the Web Server Certificate Wizard and then click Finish.
