A Web site based on Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 implements an organization's Internet presence, enterprise or divisional portal, or other specialized Web-based solution such as a financial dashboard. To implement your site's information architecture, you can create top-level sites and subsites that divide Web site content into distinct, separately navigable sites. For example, an automotive company may want to create separate sites for each vehicle model it offers.

This roadmap page provides links to Web articles, white papers, training, blog entries, and tools to help guide you in setting up the structure of your sites and subsites in Office SharePoint Server 2007. The resources presented on this page are organized in the order in which you should plan and implement your sites and subsites:

  1. Determine information architecture

  2. Configure site collections and sites

  3. Customize navigation

Determine information architecture

Information architecture is the design of an information environment that organizes sites and content so that they can be easily discovered and managed. For an enterprise-level site, such as a corporation's Internet presence site, the information architecture might be expressed by hundreds of sites containing thousands of pages. For information about implementing the information architecture for your site, see the following resources:

Create site collections and sites

In Office SharePoint Server 2007, a site collection is composed of a top-level Web site and one or more subsites. Each subsite within a site collection can also have its own subsites.

This hierarchy enables site designers or site architects to divide site content into an architecture that fits their organizational needs. For information about creating sites and subsites, see the following resources:

Customize navigation

Site navigation provides the primary interface for site users to move about the sites, subsites, and pages that compose your Internet or intranet portal site. Office SharePoint Server 2007 includes a set of customizable and extensible navigation features that help orient users of your site and enable them to move among its sites and pages.
