Administrator Console Overview

Microsoft® Forefront® Protection Server Management Console 2010 (FPSMC), by means of its user interface (known as the console), provides administrators with an easy way to deploy Forefront Protection updates and configurations, disseminate and manage scan engine updates, manage Quarantine databases, and create reports about malware, filter, and spam activity on the managed servers.

The console is used for all configuration and deployment tasks, but the console does not need to remain open while jobs are running. The FPSMC runs constantly, regardless of the status of the console window. After a job has been initiated or scheduled, the console may be closed without affecting the operation of its components.

Launching the Console

The console is used for all configuration and deployment tasks. To launch the console locally from the Start menu, click Start, click All Programs, click Microsoft Forefront Protection Server, and then click Forefront Protection Server Management Console. The console will open to the At a Glance pane in your Internet browser.

To launch the console remotely, open your Internet browser and enter the remote server name, followed by /FPSMConsole. For example, to remotely access the FPSMC on a server named FPSMCServer, enter https://FPSMCServer/FPSMConsole in your Internet browser. You must be logged on with an account that has been added to the FPSMC, or you will be unable to open the console. For more information about adding users to the FPSMC, see Managing Users.

You can enable HTTPS for the FPSMC to create a secure connection to the console. For more information, see Enabling HTTPS.
