Installing Forefront protection for SharePoint and MOSS

Applies to: Forefront Protection 2010 for SharePoint

This topic describes the methods you can use to install Forefront protection for SharePoint and MOSS. Forefront Protection 2010 for SharePoint (FPSP) should only be installed on front-end servers. Before installing FPSP, all minimum requirements must be met. For more information, see Forefront Protection 2010 for SharePoint requirements.

Important: The account used to install FPSP should be entered using the Domain\Account format when the server is part of a domain. This account must be a member of the Local Administrators group on the SharePoint server and have SharePoint Farm Administrators privileges. If SharePoint is configured to connect to the database using Windows authentication, this account must also be a member of the SQL Sysadmin role on the database server.

Note: FPSP ships with the Microsoft Forefront Server Protection Management Pack for Microsoft System Center Operations Manager 2007 (Operations Manager 2007). The management pack is an optional feature that works with Operations Manager 2007 and is used to monitor the health of your FPSP systems. FPSP works correctly if the management pack is not installed.

You can run the FPSP installer by:

  • Double-clicking the forefrontsharepointsetup.exe file—This launches the Setup Wizard and proceeds with the full installation steps described in Installing on a standalone server by using the Setup Wizard.

    Note

By launching the installer in this manner, you cannot input any external options and parameters.

  • Running the extracted setup.exe file from a command prompt in order to specify external options and parameters—If you do not specify parameters, Setup launches the Setup Wizard. You can also launch the following "unattended" installation types from a command prompt:

    • Silent installation with an answer file. (No output is displayed during the installation.)

    • Passive installation with an answer file. (A progress bar shows the status of the installation as it is running.)

For information about extracting the setup.exe file and about these installation types, see Installing from a command prompt - specifying parameters.

Each option caters to a different scenario, but all options ensure the following:

  • All product features are installed.

  • The file structure, files, services, and registry keys are created.

  • The product is correctly configured and logs errors as necessary.

  • If a non-FPSP antivirus product is already protecting your SharePoint environment, it will be disabled in favor of FPSP during the installation.

Tip

After installation, Microsoft recommends managing FPSP on multiple SharePoint servers, such as in an enterprise, with the Microsoft Forefront Protection Server Management Console (FPSMC). You can download FPSMC from the Microsoft Download Center at the following location: Microsoft Forefront Protection Server Management Console (FPSMC) 2010. Documentation for FPSMC can be found in the TechNet library at Forefront Protection Server Management Console. Otherwise, you can install and configure FPSP on a single SharePoint server, and then export and import these configuration settings to additional SharePoint servers (keeping in mind that each FPSP installation must be performed individually on that server first). For more information, see Exporting and importing configuration settings.
