Network Interoperability Technologies

Microsoft Windows Server 2003 interoperability technologies provide the core functionality that enables remote administration and directory service synchronization. The Remote Procedure Call (RPC) functionality in Windows Server 2003 enables the implementation of a comprehensive network access solution. The Directory Synchronization Services (MSDSS) and the File Migration Utility (FMU) components in Services for Netware 5.03 (SFN) enable computers running Windows Server 2003 to interoperate with computers running Novell NetWare.

The following network access technologies provide options for secure client access to an organization’s network.

Remote Procedure Call

RPC is technology for creating distributed client/server programs. RPC is an efficient and secure interprocess communication (IPC) mechanism that enables data exchange and invocation of functionality residing in a different process. That process can be on the same computer, on the local area network (LAN), or across the Internet.

Services for NetWare

SFN provides directory object migration and synchronization between computers that are running Windows Server 2003 with Microsoft Active Directory and computers that are running Novell’s NetWare operating system with NDS, eDirectory, and Bindery directory services.

Network Interoperability Technologies Scenarios

RPC is an IPC technique that allows client and server software to communicate. The Microsoft RPC facility is compatible with the Open Group’s Distributed Computing Environment (DCE) specification for remote procedure calls and is interoperable with other DCE-based RPC systems, such as those for HP-UX and IBM AIX UNIX–based operating systems.

SFN is a synchronization, migration, and interoperability utility that enables the migration of objects from Novell’s NetWare operating system with NDS, eDirectory, and Bindery directory services, to Windows Server 2003 with the Active Directory directory service.
