Configuring Global Configuration Settings

The Microsoft Forefront Protection Server Management Console (FPSMC) Global Configuration work pane includes SMTP server settings used for administrator notifications, the quarantine and statistics settings that determine how often data is collected from the managed servers, and the download configuration settings that specify the primary location from which the FPSMC downloads signatures for the managed servers.

SMTP Server Settings

The FPSMC uses SMTP server settings to send notifications about events. To configure the FPSMC to send these notifications, you must specify an SMTP server and an email address to be used in the From field for the notifications.

To configure the SMTP server settings

  1. Click Global Configuration, located in the Administration section of the Navigation Area, to open the Global Configuration work pane.

  2. Enter the name of the SMTP server to use in the SMTP server field. You can enter either the computer name (in the format computername.domainname.com) or the IP address.

  3. Enter a valid email address in the From address field. This address will be used in the From field for notifications and alerts.

  4. To use authentication for sending email reports from the FPSMC if there are no anonymous SMTP servers in the domain, select Require SMTP authentication to reveal the User name and Password fields. Enter the appropriate credentials.

  5. Click Save to retain your settings.

Quarantine and Statistics Settings

The Quarantine and Statistics Settings section manages how frequently the FPSMC polls the managed servers for report and quarantine data.

To configure the polling settings

  1. Click Global Configuration, located in the Administration section of the Navigation Area, to open the Global Configuration work pane.

  2. Enter the appropriate polling interval in the Polling interval field. This setting manages how frequently FPSMC polls the managed servers for report and quarantine data.

  3. Enter the desired quarantine retention window in the Purge after (days) field. This setting manages how many days a quarantined item is stored in the FPSMC database.

  4. Indicate a maximum number of records that can be polled per server in a single poll by entering a number in the Maximum polled records per server field.

  5. To enable spam quarantine, select the Retrieve spam quarantine data option.

  6. To disable quarantine polling completely, clear the Enable quarantine polling option. Leave it selected to continue polling quarantine data.

  7. Click Save to retain your settings.

For more detailed information about quarantine and statistics settings, see Configuring the Quarantine Settings.

Download Configuration Settings

The Download Configuration settings specify the primary location that the FPSMC will use to download signatures.

To configure the download configuration settings

  1. Click Global Configuration, located in the Administration section of the Navigation Area, to open the Global Configuration work pane.

  2. Enter the desired site in the Download location information field. This is the site from which the FPSMC will download signatures. The Microsoft site is entered by default. You may change this to another site, if desired.

    Note

The “https://” protocol is understood, and you should not include it in the Download location information field when entering a site.

  3. If you are using a proxy server, enter the appropriate information in the Proxy server, Port, Proxy username, and Proxy password fields.

    Note

It is recommended that you use credentials with the minimum privileges. These should not be domain credentials, and the user should be granted access only to the proxy server.

  4. Click Save to retain your settings.
