Systems Management Server 2003 Software Update Scanning Tools

SMS 2003 utilizes the Security Update Inventory Tool and the Microsoft Office Inventory Tool for Updates to determine the update compliance of managed systems. These tools can only be used within an SMS 2003 site hierarchy, or on SMS 2.0 sites and client computers that report to the SMS 2003 site. The Security Update Inventory Tool and the Office Inventory Tool for Updates are packaged together for download. The SMS Extended Security Update Inventory Tool is downloaded separately.

  • October 20, 2004 - Released: Scanning Tools updated for SMS 2003 SP1 for Chinese (Simplified), Chinese (Traditional), French, and Korean languages.
  • September 10, 2004 - Released: English-only enhancements for SMS 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1) (International versions of SMS 2003 SP1 scan tools are coming soon).
  • April 15, 2004 - Released: Chinese (Simplified), Chinese (Traditional), French, German, Japanese, and Korean

Security Update Inventory Tool

Updated to incorporate Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (MBSA) version 1.2, which improves security update detection and supports the following additional products for detection (see KB 837722):

  • MDAC 2.5, 2.6, 2.7, and 2.8
  • Exchange Server 2003
  • Microsoft Virtual Machine
  • MSXML 3.0 SP2 or later
  • BizTalk Server 2000, 2002, and 2004
  • Commerce Server 2000 and 2002
  • Content Management Server 2001 and 2002
  • Host Integration Server 2000, and SNA Server 4.0

Support for previous releases

The previous release of the SMS 2003 Software Update Scanning Tools used MBSA version 1.2 for the Security Update Inventory Tool. The new scanning tools released with SMS 2003 SP1 also uses MBSA 1.2, but includes additional code. This version of the scanning tools will work with both SMS 2003 and SMS 2003 SP1. However, after Sept 10, 2004, only this version of the scanning tools is supported. Please upgrade to the new version of the Scanning Tools as soon as possible.

Security Update Inventory Tool
  
DescriptionThe Security Update Inventory Tool is used to create an inventory of applicable and installed security updates for each client computer. This data is included in the SMS inventory and a comprehensive view of the status is provided through the Web-based reporting capabilities. (This tool uses technology developed for Microsoft by Shavlik Technologies LLC).
ContentSecurityPatch_XXX.exe1 - This executable file is contained inside SMS2003ScanTools_XXX1.exe2 and will install the Security Update Inventory Tool that includes scanning and sync components. It also includes release notes, called SecUpdInvenRelNotes.htm, and an online help file, called SecUpdInvent.chm.

  • Simple setup process configures the hierarchy for weekly scanning of all computers to identify security bulletin compliance levels
  • Automated task obtains the latest catalog of updates (no information is sent to Microsoft; only specific files documented in the Help files are downloaded)
  • Can be configured to report audit results during existing inventory schedules or in expedited fashion for more urgent auditing

  • Windows NT 4.0 SP5 or later (SMS client computers)

Microsoft Office Inventory Tool for Updates

Although the underlying tool has not changed, it is strongly recommended that you install this update to take advantage of the improved code base.

Microsoft Office Inventory Tool for Updates
DescriptionThe Microsoft Office Inventory Tool for Updates uses the Microsoft Office Update Tool and the Office Update Database to carry out automated, recurring scans of client computers for installed or applicable Office updates. This includes updates that address issues raised in Microsoft security bulletins. This data is converted to, and included in, the SMS inventory information and can also be viewed from a central point through the Web-based reporting tool.

Localized Catalogs

Localized catalogs are available in French, German, and Japanese. These catalogs will allow the Distribute Software Update Wizard to automatically download updates that are specific to these languages. If you install French, German, or Japanese versions of the Security Update Inventory Tool, these downloads will include both the selected language and English catalogs by default. To enable additional languages, see KB 838403.

Display Considerations when Using Localized Catalogs

For the Security Update Inventory Tool only: If your environment has client computers using different languages than your site server, using localized catalogs will help reduce the effort for manually downloading language-specific software updates. However, if the SMS Administrative console language does not match the localized title of the software updates, the SMS administrative console and Distribute Software Updates Wizard will not display the localized titles of software updates. The QNumber field can be used to identify software updates where the title languages do not match.
