Set DNS Properties for Message Queuing

Applies To: Windows Server 2008

Use this procedure to set DNS properties for Message Queuing.

If you are operating in an environment that requires the resolution of DNS domain names, such as an environment in which queries are sent to Active Directory Domain Services, the DNS settings (for example, the DNS server addresses) must be configured properly on each computer for Message Queuing to resolve computer names correctly.

It is recommended that you verify that each computer is set with a fully qualified DNS name. Otherwise, some Message Queuing operations may fail. This property is typically set automatically by the Net Logon service on each computer in a Windows ServerĀ® 2008 domain.

You can use these procedures to set DNS properties for Message Queuing and to verify that a Message Queuing computer is set with a fully qualified DNS name.

Membership in <Machine Name>\Network Configuration Operators, or equivalent, is the minimum required to complete this procedure.

To set DNS properties for Message Queuing

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Network Connections.

  2. Right-click Local Area Connection, and then click Properties.

  3. In the Local Area Connection Properties dialog box, in the components list, click Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6).

  4. Click Properties.

  5. On the General page, do one of the following:

    • To specify that the DNS server will be located automatically, on the General page, select Obtain DNS server address automatically.

    • To specify one or two DNS servers, on the General page, select Use the following DNS server addresses. Then, in Preferred DNS server, type the IP address of the preferred DNS server, and in Alternate DNS server, type the IP address of an optional alternate DNS server.

  6. To specify more than two DNS servers, on the General page, click Advanced. On the Advanced TCP/IP Settings page, click the DNS tab. Under DNS server addresses, in order of use, click Add; in DNS server, type the address of a DNS server and click Add. Repeat this step for each DNS server that you want to specify. You can use the Up and Down buttons to change the order of the DNS servers in the list. You can also click Edit to change the address of the selected DNS server in the list, or you can click Remove to delete it from the list.

  7. Repeat steps 3 - 6 for the Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) component.

To verify that the Message Queuing computer is set with a fully qualified DNS name

  1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Active Directory Users and Computers.

  2. In the console tree, right-click the applicable computer object, click Properties, and on the General page, inspect DNS Name.

Additional considerations

  • This task is performed only if you are operating in a DNS-only environment (an environment that has no WINS server). In this environment, Message Queuing requires DNS to be configured to correctly resolve computer names.
