You Cannot Find Any Objects for Message Queuing in Active Directory Domain Services

Applies To: Windows Server 2008

Describes a specific problem with Message Queuing. Includes step-by-step instructions for fixing the problem.

This problem typically occurs when you have not selected the necessary view options in Active Directory Users and Computers. When this problem occurs, you may be able to locate Message Queuing objects in Active Directory Users and Computers with the Find Message Queuing Queue dialog box but you do not see any Message Queuing objects displayed under any computers or domain controllers.

Note

To display the Find Message Queuing Queue dialog box click the Action menu, point to All Tasks, point to Find, and then select Message Queuing Queue from the Find dropdown of the Users, Contacts, and Groups dialog box.

Diagnosis

To display Message Queuing objects associated with other objects in Active Directory Domain Services, you must enable the Advanced Features view of Active Directory Users and Computers. Click the View menu and check whether the Advanced Features view is enabled or not.

Resolution

To enable the Advanced Features view of Active Directory Users and Computers complete the following steps.

To enable the Advanced Features view of Active Directory Users and Computers

  1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Active Directory Users and Computers.

  2. On the View menu, click Users, Groups, and Computers as containers, and then click Advanced Features.

So that this view is always enabled by default, you can save these changes by creating your own .msc file for Active Directory Users and Computers. In such a case, the first time you open a .msc file that you previously created, on the File menu, click Options, and then select one of the three user mode entries in Console mode. Now the console will subsequently open in a user mode with the correct view enabled. Opening a snap-in console in one of the user modes (rather than in author mode) is safer from an administrative standpoint, because no one else can potentially change the behavior or the look of the console.

Verification

In the console tree, verify that you can see msmq objects in Active Directory Domain Services.

Where?

  • Active Directory Users and Computers/YourDomain/YourOrganizationalUnit (such as Computers or Domain Controllers)/YourSourceComputer/msmq

You should now be able to see msmq objects in Active Directory Domain Services.
