Configuring an Application Server Role

Applies To: Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2003 with SP1

You can use the Configure Your Server wizard to install or remove many services on a computer running the Microsoft® Windows® Server 2003, Standard Edition; Windows® Server 2003, Enterprise Edition; Windows® Server 2003, Datacenter Edition; or Windows® Server 2003, Web Edition operating system. The server roles that you can install by using this wizard include the following: file server, print server, application server (IIS, ASP.NET), terminal server, DNS server, and DHCP server.

The application server role can include IIS 6.0, COM+, ASP.NET, and FrontPage® Server Extensions from Microsoft. Before you install IIS 6.0 on your server, review the technologies offered in the application server role and decide which technologies you want to install and enable during initial installation, and which technologies you will install later as needed. Then prepare for the IIS 6.0 installation by reviewing security considerations.
