Upgrading an MDM Enrollment Server to MDM 2008 SP1

2/9/2009

You must upgrade MDM Enrollment Server to MDM 2008 SP1. If you use load balancing for multiple servers that are running MDM Enrollment Server, follow the steps in this section to upgrade one or several servers that are running MDM Enrollment Server. You will be unable to change device certification authority settings, full qualified domain names (FQDNs), locations of servers that are running Microsoft SQL Server, installation directory paths, or Web site administration ports during this process.

Important

To upgrade from MDM to MDM 2008 SP1, the administrator running the upgrade installers (Setup MSIs for MDM Enrollment Server, MDM Device Management Server, MDM Gateway Server, MDM Self Service Portal, MDM Administrator Tools) must be a member of both the SCMDM2008ServerAdministrators and SCMDMServerAdmins (SCMDM2008) administrator groups. If the user is not a member of the MDM Server Administrators group, Setup will fail. Ensure you log off and then on after changing permissions.

The upgrade process will automatically re-request certificates for MDM Enrollment Server. On the Server Certification Authority page, if you select the Do not request certificates during setup check box, there will be no certificates on your MDM Enrollment Web sites after the upgrade. During the upgrade process, certificates are not deleted from the certificate stores on the MDM Enrollment Server.

Important

If the automatic certificate process fails in this step, you must manually attach the certificates to the appropriate MDM Enrollment Server Internet Information Services (IIS) Web sites. For more information about how to install certificates manually, see Manual Certificate Procedures in the MDM Deployment Guide. Also any pre-enrollment record that is created before this upgrade will become invalid. You must recreate any existing pre-enrollment request after the upgrade process is complete.

To upgrade MDM Enrollment Server

  1. On the MDM 2008 SP1 Setup menu, choose Enrollment Server.

  2. On the Enrollment Server Upgrade Wizard page, choose Upgrade Enrollment Server, and then choose Next.

  3. Read the Microsoft Software License Terms, and then select the I accept the License Terms for Microsoft Software check box. Choose Next.

  4. On the Instance Selection page, select the SCMDM2008 instance, and then choose Next.

  5. On the Installation Directory page, the path of the installation directory appears. However, it is not available for change. Choose Next.

  6. On the Database Installation page, the location of the SQL server appears. However, it is not available for change. Choose Next.

  7. On the Server Certification Authority page, in the Certification Authority box, type the location and the name of your certification authority server. This box is prepopulated with the certification authority that you used in the MDM 2008 version. If you do not want to change these values, you can accept these values. Type the certification authority in the form of <ca_server_FQDN>\<ca_instance_name>. This should be a certification authority where you have MDM certificate templates enabled. Choose Next.

  8. If you have not already configured Microsoft Update on the server, a Microsoft Update page will appear that prompts you to configure the server for Microsoft Update. Make your selection, and then choose Next.

  9. On the Ready to Upgrade page, verify your selections, and then choose Upgrade.

  10. On the Progress page, Setup may appear to stop responding for as long as 30 minutes or more as it performs the database upgrade. You must not close or cancel this process.

  11. Choose Finish to complete MDM Enrollment Server Setup. You must allow enough time for Active Directory directory services replication to finish.

  12. If you use multiple servers that are running MDM Enrollment Server, you must repeat these procedures for every server.

Important

Do not place the MDM Enrollment Servers back online until you are finished with the next step, Upgrading an MDM Device Management Server to MDM 2008 SP1.
