Kanban schedule board (form) [AX 2012]

Updated: November 27, 2013

Applies To: Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R3, Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R2, Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 Feature Pack, Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012

Click Production control > Common > Lean manufacturing > Kanban schedule board.

Use this form to view an overview of the kanban process jobs that are assigned to a specific work cell. The Kanban schedule board form is interactive, and you can use it to manually schedule the jobs. Select one or more jobs in the form, and then use the functions on the Action Pane. You can also schedule jobs by dragging them between different sections of the form.

The first time that you open the form, you must select a work cell in the Work cell form. To display the schedule for a different work cell, click the View tab, and then, in the Options group, click Change work cell.

The Kanban schedule board form has the following sections:

  • A planning section

  • An indicator of the performance for cycle times

  • An overview of the kanban quantity

  • A legend

The planning section of the Kanban schedule board form displays the schedule for jobs that are planned. The information in the planning section is organized and displayed as follows:

  • The structure of the schedule depends on the type of planning period and the planning time fence that are defined for the capacity of the work cell. The planning period can be either a day or a week. For more information, see Production flow model (form).

  • Each period is displayed in a column. Only periods that are defined as working days in the calendar are displayed. The current date is highlighted by orange borders. You can use the scroll buttons in the upper-left corner of the planning section to go to past or future periods.

  • At the bottom of each period, the scheduled capacity and the available capacity are displayed. If the capacity for a specific period is overloaded, the capacity information is highlighted by a red background, and a warning icon is displayed.

  • Jobs are assigned to the planning periods of a work cell. Multiple jobs in a planning period form a sequence of jobs.

  • Each job is represented by a kanban symbol. The size of the symbol corresponds to the calculated consumption of the available capacity by the job.

  • Right-click a job to display additional reference information for the job.

  • If the lean schedule groups are configured to use colors, these colors are displayed in the schedule. Colors can help improve the usability of the schedule.

    TipTip

Configure the colors that are used for lean schedule groups before you create kanbans and kanban jobs. The colors then are assigned to the jobs when kanbans are created. For more information, see Lean schedule groups (form).

The performance indicator in the Kanban schedule board form indicates the performance pace of the work cell. Performance is measured by comparing the actual average cycle time that is calculated for the activity to the minimum and maximum cycle times that are calculated for the activity. The minimum and maximum cycle times are calculated based on the takt time that the production flow version requires, and on the cycle time ratios of the activity relations.

Colors are used to enhance the usability of the performance indicator. The black bar indicates the actual cycle time of the activity.

  • On takt – When the black bar is located in the green shaded area of the indicator, the actual cycle time is on pace, based on the minimum and maximum takt times that are defined.

  • Speed up – When the black bar is located in the red shaded area to the right of the indicator, the actual cycle time is equal to or greater than the maximum takt time that is defined. Therefore, the pace of the work cell is slower than the criteria that are defined.

  • Slow down – When the black bar is located in the red shaded area to the left of the indicator, the actual cycle time is equal to or less than the minimum takt time that is defined. Therefore, the pace of the work cell is faster than the criteria that are defined.

NoteNote

The performance indicator is available only for work cells that process a single activity for a production flow.

The overview of the kanban quantity in the Kanban schedule board form provides an overview of all the active kanbans and the corresponding jobs that are assigned to the selected work cell. The overview indicates the current on-hand inventory in supermarkets, the work that is in progress, and the jobs that are planned and not planned. The information in the overview is organized and displayed as follows:

  • All active jobs that are assigned to the work cell are grouped by kanban rule. The product selections of the kanban rules are also displayed.

  • Multiple kanban rules can supply the same product. Each kanban rule is displayed on a separate line.

  • Kanban rules are sorted and displayed based on the planning urgency of the rules. The most urgent rule is displayed first. The planning urgency of a kanban rule is calculated based on the number of active jobs for the rule and the minimum alert quantity for kanbans.

  • The jobs can have any status and are displayed in order of descending status. Jobs that have a status of Completed are displayed first.

  • Background colors are used to indicate the following conditions:

    • Green – The kanban quantity meets the level that is defined by the minimum alert quantity and maximum alert quantity of the kanban rule.

    • Red – The kanban quantity is less than the minimum alert quantity of the kanban rule, or greater than the maximum alert quantity.

The legend at the bottom of the Kanban schedule board form displays the various icons that are used in the schedule. These icons indicate the current status of a specific job, or the status of the handling unit that is referenced by a job. These icons improve the usability of the schedule.

The following tables provide descriptions for the controls in this form.

Tab

Description

Kanban quantity overview

View an overview of the kanban quantity for all active kanbans.

Unplanned

View an overview of the kanban quantity for the jobs that are currently assigned to the work cell, but that are not currently planned.

Use the buttons to perform actions for the selected kanban job or jobs.

Button

Description

Backward

Move the selected planned jobs to the previous spot in the sequence for the current period.

Forward

Move the selected planned jobs to the next spot in the sequence for the current period.

Previous period

Move the selected planned jobs from the current period to the previous period. The following options are available:

  • Start – Move the jobs to the start of the previous period.

  • End – Move the jobs to the end of the previous period.

Next period

Move the selected planned jobs from the current period to the next period. The following options are available:

  • Start – Move the jobs to the start of the next period.

  • End – Move the jobs to the end of the next period.

Schedule from date

Open the Schedule forward from date form, where you can move the selected planned jobs from the current period to a future date.

By default, this form displays the capacity shortage reaction that is defined for the production flow model for the work cell. To change the capacity shortage reaction, select the Override capacity shortage reaction check box, and then select a new reaction in the Capacity shortage reaction field.

This control is not available in versions of Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 prior to cumulative update 6 for AX 2012 R2.

Create kanban

For fixed quantity kanbans or scheduled kanbans, open a form where you can create additional kanbans. The new kanbans are based on the kanban rule that is selected in the kanban quantity overview.

Plan

Plan the selected jobs based on the due date.

Cancel

Reset the status of the selected jobs to Not planned.

The status of the referenced handling unit is changed to Not assigned.

You can reset the status of jobs that have a status of Planned, Prepared, In progress, or Completed.

Revert job status

Open the Revert kanban job status form, where you can change the status of one or more jobs. For more information, see Revert kanban job status (form).

Pegging tree supply status

For event kanbans, check the projected availability for the pegged kanbans.

  • The due date for pegged kanban jobs that have a status of Planned must be equal to or later than the end date of the planned period.

  • The due date for pegged kanban jobs that have any status other than Planned must be equal to or later than the current day.

If this check fails, a warning icon is displayed for the job.

Use alternative kanban rule

For event kanbans or scheduled kanbans, open the Use alternative kanban rule wizard, where you can assign a different kanban rule to the kanbans. You can use this feature to reschedule a kanban job that is performed by a different work cell or by a subcontractor. For more information, see Use alternative kanban rule (form).

Create event kanbans

Process pegging events for the selected jobs. If kanban rules are configured for kanban line events to supply material that is required for the selected jobs, additional event kanbans are created.

Plan entire pegging tree

Plan any kanbans that have a status of Not planned, and that are pegged to the selected jobs.

NoteNote

When you click this button, you do not actually plan the selected jobs. You plan only the dependent demand.
