About Library Refreshes

During a library refresh, Virtual Machine Manager (VMM) indexes files stored on library shares and then updates Library view and resource listings. Periodic library refreshes can be configured, or individual library shares can be refreshed as needed.

By default, Virtual Machine Manager automatically refreshes library shares at 1-hour intervals. Use Library Settings, in Administration view, to change the refresh interval or to disable automatic library refreshes.

Alternatively, you can perform manual refreshes on individual library shares by using the Refresh share action in Library view.

A library refresh indexes the following file types:

  • ISO images (.iso)
  • Sysprep.exe information files (.inf)
  • Virtual hard disks (.vhd)
  • Virtual floppy disks (.vfd)
  • Windows PowerShell scripts (.ps1)
  • Configuration files from virtual machines created in VMware (.vmx), to enable virtual-to-virtual machine conversions (V2V conversions)

A library refresh does not index the following file types:

  • Virtual machine configuration files (.vmc) for virtual machines created in Virtual Server. Instead, a new virtual machine is created for each .vmc file. The new virtual machine's configuration is stored in the VMM database. Although a .vmc file is created for use by Virtual Server, the file not indexed because it is not used by Virtual Machine Manager.
  • Virtual hard disks (.vhd) attached to virtual machines are indexed but not displayed in the library because the files cannot be used in other virtual machines, templates, or profiles.
