Downloading the Windows Intune Client Software
Updated: December 17, 2012
Applies To: Windows Intune December 2012 Release
This topic describes how to download the Windows Intune client software.
You can manually install the software on targeted computers that you want to manage with Windows Intune, or you can automate the software deployment to groups of computers by using Group Policy or another automated deployment method.
After the client software is installed on a targeted computer, the Windows Intune service automatically updates the client software with new versions to provide the managed computers with the latest improvements. These updates are necessary for continued use of Windows Intune. For more information, see the Microsoft Online Privacy Statement.
After you install the Windows Intune client software, you might be required to restart the targeted computers.
Before you download and deploy the client software, ensure that you have reviewed the Planning for Windows Intune Client Deployment and Enrollment section.
Download the Client Software
To download the client software installation package
Open the Windows Intune administrator console.
In the workspace shortcuts pane, click the Administration icon.
In the navigation pane, click Client Software Download.
On the Client Software Download page, click Download Client Software.
The client software is contained in a compressed (zipped) folder that can be opened or saved. In the dialog box, click Save to store the zipped folder to a secure location.
Security Note The Windows Intune client software installation package contains unique account identifiers. If unauthorized or malicious users gain access to the installation package, they can enroll computers to the account that is represented by its embedded certificate. To avoid unauthorized access, we recommend the following best practices:
After you download the enrollment package, store it in a secure location.
When you deploy the client software, place the enrollment package on a shared, secure location that provides read-only access to required users only. Set the location as inaccessible to the Everyone group.
Secure the network that contains both the shared location and the destination client by using IPsec or a similar security technology.
- After you download the enrollment package, store it in a secure location.
After the download is complete, open the folder where you saved the installation package.
Right-click the Windows_Intune_Setup.zip file, and then click Extract All, which opens the Extract Compressed (Zipped) Folders dialog box.
Click Browse to select a destination folder or leave the default folder, and then click Extract to extract the setup files.
When the extraction is complete, a new window opens showing the files in the specified destination folder.
You can copy the files to a network share, a thumb drive, or deploy the files by using an electronic software deployment (ESD) system. However, it is important to keep both files together because the ACCOUNTCERT file is required by the setup application when it is run.
Important Do not rename or separate the ACCOUNTCERT file from the setup application or the client software installation fails.
After you have downloaded the client software, proceed to Manually Deploying the Windows Intune Client Software or Automatically Deploying the Client Software by using Group Policy in Windows Intune.
