Uninstalling Software from Windows Intune Managed Computers

Updated: December 17, 2012

Applies To: Windows Intune

You can uninstall managed software from computers that are managed by Windows Intune.

The method to uninstall managed software for all installer types is the same, except for software packages that were installed using an .exe setup file.

To uninstall software

  1. Open the Windows Intune administrator console.

  2. Open the Software workspace and highlight the software you want to uninstall.

  3. In the Software navigation pane, click Manage Deployment.

  4. Follow the process for managing a deployment found in the topic, Automatically Deploying Software Packages to Devices and Users in Windows Intune, and on the Deployment Settings page, in the Deployment setting, select Uninstall.

To uninstall software that was installed by using an .exe setup file

  1. If the software setup file is an .exe program file, Windows Intune cannot interpret how the publisher designed the software to be uninstalled. In this case, you must create a separate software package to uninstall the software from client computers. For detailed information about how to create a managed software package, see Adding and Deploying Software. For specific information about the software package that you want to uninstall, refer to the documentation that was provided by the software publisher.

Some software uses the same setup file to both install and uninstall the software package. In this case, you must create a new managed software package that uses the same setup file, and set an uninstall command-line parameter such as setup /u. Other software packages use a separate .exe program file to uninstall the software. In this case, you must create a new managed software package that uses the uninstall .exe program file.

  2. After you create the software package that contains the uninstall command and parameters, you complete the process by deploying the package as described in Automatically Deploying Software Packages to Devices and Users in Windows Intune. Although you are uninstalling the software from client computers, select the option to Install the software deployment package on the targeted client computers. You are installing a software package whose task is to uninstall the software.
