Overview of Troubleshooting IIS 6.0

Applies To: Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2003 with SP1

Problems that occur when administering IISĀ 6.0 might be difficult to solve for any of the following reasons:

  • Problem reports from end users might be vague or incomplete, lacking such information as the content of error messages, how frequently a problem occurs, or the specific conditions under which the problem occurred.

  • Logs do not record information that reveals the cause of the problem.

  • The problem occurs in a complex, widely distributed application, which is difficult to track comprehensively.

The goal of troubleshooting is to isolate and determine the causes of problems that interfere with normal operation. This section describes a troubleshooting methodology and some of the tools that you can use to troubleshoot a server running IISĀ 6.0 and the Web applications that it hosts.
