Creating Account OUs

Applies To: Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2003 R2, Windows Server 2003 with SP1, Windows Server 2003 with SP2

The process that you use to create account OUs varies according to whether you are upgrading a Windows NT 4.0 domain in place or creating a new Windows Server 2003 Active Directory domain. Use one of the following approaches to create account OUs for your domain:

  1. If you are upgrading a Windows NT 4.0 MUD in place to an Active Directory domain, create an account OU in the domain for the accounts that are to be upgraded. Leave the service administrator groups and user accounts in the default structure and move the remaining user and group accounts to the newly created account OU.

  2. If you are restructuring Windows NT 4.0 MUDs into an Active Directory domain, create an account OU for each independently managed source MUD that is to be migrated into this domain. If the same IT group manages multiple source MUDs, you can migrate accounts from those domains into a single account OU.

  3. If you are deploying a new Active Directory domain, create an account OU for the domain so that you can delegate control of the accounts in the domain.
