This topic describes the minimum server requirements for the Microsoft Forefront Protection Server Management Console (FPSMC).

Minimum Server Requirements

The following are the minimum server requirements:

  • 64-bit (x64) architecture-based computer

  • Windows Server® 2008 R2

  • 300 megabytes (MB) of free memory

  • 30 megabytes (MB) of available disk space for the console install

  • 900 megabytes (MB) of available disk space for SQL Server 2008 R2 Express

  • 4 gigabytes (GB) of available disk space for full signature redistribution

    Note

    The amount of disk space required by the database will vary based on server traffic, the number of servers, and the retention period. On a high-traffic server with a one-year data retention period, it is recommended that you allocate 1 gigabyte (GB) of disk space per Forefront Protection 2010 for Exchange Server and Forefront Protection 2010 for SharePoint server.

  • .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 or later framework

  • Microsoft Chart Controls for .NET 3.5 SP1

  • Latest Windows Update version

  • Internet Information Services (IIS) 7.0

    FPSMC installs the following IIS subcomponents: IIS-WebServerRole, IIS-DefaultDocument, IIS-StaticContent, IIS-RequestFiltering, IIS-WebServerManagementTools, IIS-IIS6ManagementCompatibility, IIS-Metabase, IIS-WMICompatibility, IIS-LegacyScripts, IIS-ManagementScripting Tools, IIS-ManagementService, IIS-ManagementConsole, IIS-Security, IIS-BasicAuthentication,IIS-DigestAuthentication, IIS-WindowsAuthentication, IIS-ISAPIExtensions, IIS-ISAPIFilter, IIS-NetFxExtensibility, IIS-ASPNet, NetFx2Server Core, NetFx3ServerCore, and NetFx3.

  • SQL Server 2008 or above is required for an Enterprise installation. Otherwise, FPSMC will automatically install SQL Server 2008 R2 Express.

The FPSMC will automatically install .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 and Internet Information Services (IIS) 7.0 if they are not already present. The FPSMC will also automatically install SQL Server 2008 R2 Express if you select the Express installation. For more information about Express and Enterprise installations, see Before You Begin. You must manually install Microsoft Chart Controls for .NET 3.5 SP1 before you can install FPSMC. Environmental Considerations

The following are the environmental considerations:

  • FPSMC will not install on a server running any other Forefront server product.

  • FPSMC will not install on a server running any version of Microsoft Exchange Server or Microsoft SharePoint Server.

  • FPSMC will not install on a domain controller.

  • FPSMC must be installed on a domain-joined server.

  • .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 must be installed on servers managed by FPSMC.
