Updated: April 1, 2011

Applies To: System Center Configuration Manager 2007 R2

This topic specifies requirements necessary to implement and maintain Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager 2007 R2 in your environment.

noteNote
Configuration Manager 2007 R2 is not a full product version. Configuration Manager 2007 R2 requires that Configuration Manager 2007 SP1 or Configuration Manager 2007 SP2 already are installed on your site server before running Configuration Manager 2007 R2 Setup.

For general Configuration Manager 2007 supported configuration information, see Configuration Manager Supported Configurations. For information about installation prerequisites required for Configuration Manager sites, see Prerequisites for Installing Configuration Manager.

The following tables list products that are compatible for use with this version of Configuration Manager 2007. No extension of support for these products beyond their current product lifecycles is implied. Products that are beyond their current support lifecycle are not supported for use with Configuration Manager 2007. For more information about Microsoft Support Lifecycles, visit the Microsoft Support Lifecycle Web site at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=208270.

noteNote
The information in this topic applies only to Configuration Manager 2007 R2 and Configuration Manager 2007 R3.

Supported Installation Paths

Configuration Manager 2007 R2 installation media is available in the following forms:

  • As an evaluation release that can be installed on a Configuration Manager 2007 SP1 or Configuration Manager 2007 SP2 evaluation site installation

  • As a feature update release to be applied to an existing Configuration Manager 2007 SP1 site or Configuration Manager 2007 SP2 site

Upgrading from Configuration Manager 2007 SP1 with Configuration Manager 2007 R2 installed to Configuration Manager 2007 SP2 does not require Configuration Manager 2007 R2 setup to be run again. Configuration Manager 2007 R2 remains installed on the site server.

The following table shows on which product versions that the Configuration Manager 2007 R2 feature update release can be installed. For more information about installing Configuration Manager 2007 R2, see Configuration Manager 2007 R2 Installation Checklist.

Unsupported Operating Systems

Unless explicitly specified, the list of unsupported operating system platforms has not changed for Configuration Manager 2007 R2 from those listed in Configuration Manager 2007 SP1 Supported Configurations or Configuration Manager 2007 SP2 Supported Configurations. However, additional operating systems can be past the service pack support dates.

To find the support timelines for your product, visit the Lifecycle Supported Service Packs Web site at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=31975. For additional information about the Microsoft support lifecycle policy, visit the Microsoft Support Lifecycle Support Policy FAQ Web site at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=31976.

The following information describes changes to supported operating systems in Configuration Manager 2007 R2 from those listed in Configuration Manager Supported Configurations.

  • No features of Configuration Manager 2007 R2 are supported on Windows Embedded devices.

  • Because Microsoft Application Virtualization (App-V) 4.5 (no service pack or with SP1) is not supported on 64-bit operating systems, virtual application management in Configuration Manager 2007 R2 is not supported for 64-bit systems. Additional information about Application Virtualization client hardware and software requirements can be found at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=142274.

Configuration Specifics

This section describes support configurations specific to Configuration Manager 2007 R2. For additional general support configuration information for Configuration Manager 2007 installations, see Configuration Manager Supported Configurations.

Application Virtualization (App-V) Version Support

  • Application Virtualization 4.5

Both the Microsoft Application Virtualization 4.5, 4.5 SP1, and 4.5 SP2 Desktop Client, and the Application Virtualization Client for Remote Desktop Services are supported by Configuration Manager 2007 R2. To support virtual application deployment to Windows 7-based clients, the App-V 4.5 SP1 or SP2 client must be used.

  • Application Virtualization 4.6

The Application Virtualization 4.6 and 4.6 SP1 Desktop Client and the Application Virtualization Client for Remote Desktop Services are supported by Configuration Manager 2007 R2 with SP2. To support virtual application deployment to Windows 2008 R2-based clients, or for 64-bit operating systems, the App-V 4.6 clients must be used.

Active Directory Schema Extensions

The Configuration Manager 2007 R2 feature release does not introduce changes to Active Directory schema extension requirements, and it is not necessary to re-extend the Active Directory schema for Configuration Manager 2007 R2 if it has already been extended for Configuration Manager 2007.

SQL Server Site Database Configurations

When Microsoft SQL Server 2008 is used to host the site database for a Configuration Manager 2007 R2 installation supporting a reporting services point site system role, we recommend that you install the update described in Article 957576 at the Microsoft Support site (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=134675).
