Error Message: The user's password must be changed before logging in the first time

Applies To: Windows Server 2008

This problem typically occurs when a user has a brand new user account, or the password on an existing account has expired and has not yet been changed.

Diagnosis

Telnet cannot grant access by accepting the expired password and then requiring the user to change the password to complete a logon. Instead, the user must log on some other way and change the password first, then the user can use the account with Telnet.

Resolution

The user must have a non-expired password to use the account with Telnet. The problem can be fixed in several ways:

  • The user must log on by using the normal Windows logon process to a computer that recognizes the user account, and then change the password as required.

  • The administrator can reset the password and ensure that it is not expired. A user account that is used only for access to a Telnet server should be set to never expire.
