Recover the Windows HPC Cluster Configuration Settings

Updated: July 2011

Applies To: Windows HPC Server 2008 R2

To restore a Windows HPC Server 2008 R2 cluster to a fully functioning state, you must recover configuration settings and data in addition to the data that is stored in the HPC databases. Depending on your cluster configuration and your backup strategy, as described in Guidelines for Backing Up a Windows HPC Server 2008 R2 Cluster, you may need to recover the shared folders of your cluster (such as REMINST and HpcServiceRegistration) or other folders or volumes on the head node. The exact steps for restoring this data depend on your backup method, the data that you backed up, and the location where you saved the backups. For more information, consult the documentation for the backup solution that you used.

For example, if you backed up your cluster databases and configuration settings by using a protection group in System Center Data Protection Manager 2010, you can recover the data from a recovery point by using the Recovery Wizard. For more information, see How to Recover Data.

If you previously exported cluster configuration settings such as node and job templates and job scheduler configuration settings by using the Export-HpcConfiguration.ps1 script, you can restore those settings on the head node of your cluster by using Import-HpcConfiguration.ps1. For more information, see Export and Import Windows HPC Cluster Configuration Settings in this topic.
