User Plug and Play

The Plug and Play system in Windows is responsible for the installation of devices. Plug and Play records the result of a device installation on a computer as an event log entry. A device installation in Windows includes the installation of a device driver and might also include a service that supports the operation of the device.

Device Installation

When you attach a new piece of hardware to your computer, Windows attempts to detect the device type and install a device driver so that Windows can communicate with and control the device. Devices and their device drivers appear in the Device Manager Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in.

Service Installation

When you attach a new piece of hardware to your computer, Windows attempts to detect the device type and install a device driver so that Windows can communicate with and control the device.  Sometimes the device driver is accompanied by a service that must run in order for the device and device driver to function properly.
