Notes

  • You do not need administrative credentials to simply view counters on a remotely managed computer unless you use Perfmon with the /WMI option. To use the Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) interface, you must be a member of the Administrators group on the remotely managed computer.

  • To monitor (rather than simply view) counters on remotely managed computers, you must be a member of the Administrators group, the Performance Log Users group, or the Performance Monitor Users group on the local computer, or you must have been delegated the appropriate authority. If the computer is joined to a domain, members of the Domain Admins group might be able to perform this procedure. As a security best practice, consider using Run as to perform this procedure. For more information, see Default local groups, Default groups, and Using Run as.

  • To open Performance, click Start, click Control Panel, double-click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Performance.

  • If you select an object on a remote computer, you might notice a short delay as System Monitor refreshes the list to reflect objects present on that computer.

  • If you do not see a counter that you want to monitor, it could be because the service or feature that provides the counter object is not installed or enabled on that computer and you might need to add it before you can monitor related data.

Information about functional differences

  • Your server might function differently based on the version and edition of the operating system that is installed, your account permissions, and your menu settings. For more information, see Viewing Help on the Web.
