HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NetBT\Parameters

Data type Range Default value

REG_DWORD

1000 – 0xFFFFFFFF

15,000 (15 seconds)

Description

Specifies the amount of time that NetBIOS over TCP/IP (NetBT) waits before trying to use WINS again after it fails to contact any WINS server. This timeout is primarily for allowing computers that are temporarily disconnected from the network, such as portable devices, to proceed through their startup process without waiting for each name registration or query attempt to time out and fail individually.

Activation Method

You must restart the computer for changes to take effect.

Note

  • This entry does not exist in the registry by default. To configure a timeout of a length other than 15 seconds, add this entry by using the registry editor Regedit.exe.

Tip

For more information about WINS name resolution, see "WINS Technical Reference" in the Networking Collection of the Windows Server 2003 Technical Reference.
