VPN Technical Reference

Virtual private network (VPN) is a network access technology that is available as part of the Routing and Remote Access service that is included in Microsoft Windows Server 2003. VPN enables administrators to provide access to private networks at a lower cost than using leased-line connections.

VPN technology is the extension of a private network that encompasses point-to-point links across shared or public networks, such as the Internet. VPN allows remote clients to connect to an organization’s network resources. VPN also allows remote offices to connect to each other to share resources and information. A VPN connection uses authentication and data encryption to help preserve the privacy and integrity of data as it traverses a public network.
