Note

This content applies to Windows 7. For Windows 8 content, see Windows Deployment with the Windows ADK.

The following topics describe the procedures that are used to create and customize Windows® PE for image deployment. The Windows OEM Preinstallation Kit (Windows OPK) and Windows Automated Installation Kit (Windows AIK) provide a base Windows PE image that you can customize by using the Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) tool. You can boot into Windows PE from a variety of media, including DVD-ROM, a USB flash drive (UFD), and directly from the hard drive.
