When you create a site collection, you must create at least one site administrator to perform all administrative tasks for the site collection.

As a best practice, you should create both primary and secondary site administrators for the site collection. When there is more than one site administrator for a site collection, you can select and remove either of them. If you remove the primary administrator, the secondary administrator automatically becomes the primary administrator of a site collection.

Note

You cannot remove the primary site administrator if that user is the only administrator of a site collection. Also, there must be at least one site administrator.
When you remove a site administrator, that user cannot perform any further administrative tasks. However, you can re-add this user as a site administrator.

Membership in the Site Administrators SharePoint group or equivalent is the minimum required to complete this procedure.

Use this procedure to remove site collection administrators.

Remove site collection administrators

  1. On the site Home page, click Site Action menu and select Site Settings.

  2. On the Site settings page, in the Users and Permissions section, select Site Collection administrators.

  3. On the Site Collection administrator page, a text box shows you the users (separated by semicolons) acting as site administrators.

  4. Remove the user you want to remove as site administrator and click OK.
