You can manage services and their activities on each server in the farm, if you first understand the different services and their characteristics. This article provides the details of the different services that are available on a server farm.

  • Central Administration Service
This service allows you to perform administration tasks for SharePoint Products and Technologies from a central location.
  • Document Conversions Launcher Service
This service schedules and initiates the document conversions. When Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 passes a document conversion request to the service, the Document Conversions Launcher Service persists with the original file stream and conversion settings information to disk, and then calls the appropriate document converter by using a command-line command.
  • Document Conversions Load Balancer Service
This service balances the document conversion requests from across the server farm. When the service receives a converter request from Office SharePoint Server 2007, the Document Conversions Load Balancer Service returns a URI to the appropriate Document Conversions Launcher Service. Office SharePoint Server 2007 connects to the specified launcher by using .NET Remoting services, and requests it to convert the specified document.
  • Excel Calculation Services
This service allows you to calculate and display Microsoft Excel spreadsheets by using Office SharePoint Server 2007 without necessarily having a copy of Excel on the client computer. With Excel Services, you can use spreadsheets to create dashboards within Office SharePoint Server 2007 or share a spreadsheet by using the browser.
  • Office SharePoint Server Search
This service is responsible for finding all information that matches the search query by searching the index files.
  • Windows SharePoint Services Help Search
This service handles search tasks for indexed content that is not indexed, such as Help.
  • Windows SharePoint Services Incoming E-Mail
This service allows e-mail messages to be accepted into discussions, document libraries, and lists.
  • Windows SharePoint Services Web Application
This service allows provisioning of SharePoint Web applications.
