Information Rights Management (IRM) enables you to limit the actions that users can take on files that have been downloaded from Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 lists or libraries. IRM encrypts the downloaded files and limits the set of users and programs that are allowed to decrypt these files. IRM can also limit the rights of the users who are allowed to read files so that they cannot take actions such as print copies of the files or copy text from them.

You can use IRM on lists or libraries to restrict the dissemination of sensitive content. For example, if you are creating a document library to share information about upcoming products with selected marketing representatives, IRM can prevent these individuals from sharing this content with others. For more information, see Applying Information Rights Management to a list or library (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=124788) on Office Online.

Important

Before using IRM, you must have a Microsoft Windows Rights Management Services (RMS) server to connect to and you must have installed the Windows Rights Management Services Client with Service Pack 2 on every Web front-end in the Office SharePoint Server 2007 farm. For more information, see Microsoft Windows Rights Management Services Client with Service Pack 2 - x86 (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=82927), RMS FAQ (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=230459), and Deploying Windows Rights Management Services with Microsoft SharePoint Server 2007 Step-by-Step Guide (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=76879&clcid=0x409).
