Install Groove Server 2010 Manager

This article describes how to install and set up Microsoft Groove Server 2010 Manager. The installation procedure involves defining the Manager server, establishing its relationship to the Microsoft SQL Server system that will store all administrative data, and creating a Web site for the Groove Server Manager administrative interface. During this installation, Groove Server Manager uses your inputs to create a database on SQL Server.

The following sections provide installation prerequisites and instructions.

Before you begin

Before installing Groove Server Manager, follow these steps:

Ensure that your equipment meets system requirements, as described in System requirements for Groove Server 2010.
To integrate Active Directory with Groove Server Manager, identify the Active Directory forest that you want to integrate and prepare the Active Directory server, as described in Prepare Active Directory for Groove Server Manager.
Install and configure SQL Server, as described in Install and configure SQL Server for Groove Server Manager.
Install and configure an IIS server on a separate computer, as described in Install and configure IIS for Groove Server Manager.
Confirm network settings, as described in Prepare the network for Groove Server Manager.
Note the SQL Server host name.
Determine and note a SQL Server database name (such as GSMSQLdb) to be used for storing Groove Server Manager data.
Ensure that you have an Active Directory account that has Read permission for the forest that will be integrated with Groove Server Manager domain.
Ensure that the Active Directory account has Log On As a Service permission on the IIS server that will host the Active Directory Synchronization Service.
Ensure that you have the necessary SQL Server logon credentials, native SQL or Windows -based, with sysadmin permissions.
Note the certification authority name for the Groove Server Manager. This must be an official, fully qualified, unique name, registered correctly with the Domain Name System (DNS) authorities or with the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).
Configure Groove Server Relay, as described in Install and configure Groove Server 2010 Relay. You can install the Relay application after you install the Manager but installing the Relay first facilitates the process the Manager and Relay integration process.

Installing Groove Server Manager

This procedure outlines the process for installing and configuring Groove Server 2010 Manager at your site.

To install Groove Server Manager on the IIS server

Read Before You Begin.
Insert the Microsoft Groove Server 2010 software media into the drive of the prepared Groove Server Manager IIS server or access the Groove Server installation files from a network location.
Click the setup file to start the installation. Then, select the option to install Microsoft Office Groove Server Manager. If a requirements message appears, you may need to install prerequisite software in order to continue.
Follow the Install wizard instructions, entering the product ID key code when you are prompted.
Click Continue, and then read and accept the Microsoft Software License agreement.
Click Continue, and then select Basic to install to the default directory: c:\Program Files\Microsoft Office Servers\14.0\Groove\Groove Management Server. Or, select Advanced to change the default installation directory, and then click Install Now.
Once the software installation is complete and the Groove Server Manager Welcome page appears, click Next.
Select the Groove Server Manager install option. Or, if this is not the first Manager installation, choosing Groove Server Manager with Audit is an option.

Warning

Do not select the Audit option for the first Manager installation. Do not select the Audit option unless you are sure that this implementation of Groove auditing is necessary in your organization. Auditing SharePoint Workspace client events can have a significant impact on system resources, including bandwidth usage and disk storage on clients and servers. If you choose the Audit installation, install the application on a separate, dedicated IIS front-end, with a separate, dedicated SQL back-end to avoid disruption of other Groove Server Manager activities. For important information about Groove Auditing, see Auditing SharePoint Workspace activity.
Click Next. The Groove Server Manager Database Configuration window appears.
Enter your SQL Server information, including the SQL Server host name, and, if SQL authentication is selected, your SQL Server user name and password, as described in the "Groove Server Manager configuration information," table after this procedure.

The Groove Server Manager uses this information to establish a connection to the database server on which the Groove Server Manager depends for data storage. Make sure that the SQL Server user name and password have sufficient permissions to enable you to create a database on this server.
Click Next. The Directory configuration window appears.
Enter the Directory configuration information, as described in the table named "Directory configuration information," later in this topic.
Click Next. The Server Configuration window or Groove Audit Server Configuration window appears, depending on your previous selections.

If the Groove Audit Server window appears, supply the required information, as described in Auditing SharePoint Workspace activity, and then click Next. The Server configuration window appears.
In the Server Configuration window, enter the required information, as described in the table named "Required server configuration information," later in this topic.
Click Next. The Security Settings window appears.
Enter the security information as described in the table named "Security information," later in this topic.
Click Next. The Summary window appears.
Click Next, and then follow the Configuration wizard to the end and then click Finish.

The Groove Server Manager administrative Web site opens, providing you with an administrative interface that has the URL of, http://<hostname>. SharePoint Workspace clients access the client side of the Groove Server Manager Web site through the URL, http://<hostname>/Gmsclient.

A management domain is also created for you. The management domain contains encryption keys, a pair of signature keys for authenticating the domain, and a set of default policies that you can change as needed. The certification authority name that you defined applies to this domain.
Install the latest Office Server Service Pack, if available.

Note

Make sure to perform this step immediately after you install Groove Server Manager.

Groove Server Manager configuration information

Groove Server Manager database configuration fields	Explanations
SQL Server
Database Name:	Enter the name of the SQL Server that will support SQL Server.
Use Windows logon	Select this check box to specify Windows authentication.
Use SQL Server logon	Select this check box to specify native SQL Server authentication.
User name	Applies to Use SQL Server logon. Type the logon information for the SQL Server. Note Make sure that the logon gives you database creation permissions.
Password	Applies to Use SQL Server logon. Type a password for the SQL Server.

Directory configuration information

Directory configuration fields	Explanations
Create a member directory using SQL Server	Select this option to create a directory of SharePoint Workspace user information that you will manually populate using the Groove Server Manager administrative Web interface. Note This option is recommended for test installs or for small organizations that do not have access to Active Directory. Once you install Groove Server Manager with this option, you cannot integrate Active Directory with the SharePoint management system unless you reinstall Groove Server Manager and select the Active Directory option.
Use Active Directory as member directory	Select this option to integrate an existing Active Directory forest of SharePoint Workspace user information with Groove Server Manager. Active Directory integration requires you to install a Groove AD extension on the Active Directory server as described in Prepare Active Directory for Groove Server Manager. Note Once you install Groove Server Manager with this option, you cannot manually add SharePoint Workspace user information to Groove Server Manager. To change your directory option, you must reinstall Groove Server Manager and select the manual directory creation option.
Active Directory Forest	Enter the name of the Active Directory forest that contains the database of SharePoint Workspace users whom you want to manage. The management server will synchronize its user list against this database, which may include users in a specific domain (such as northeast.contoso.com) or across the organization (such as contoso.com).
Enable directory integration service on this server	Select this option to enable the Groove Server Manager Active Directory Synchronization Service on the Groove Server Manager server that is running IIS. This service creates a SharePoint Workspace user directory for Groove Server Manager by integrating Groove Server Manager with an Active Directory forest. If you have already installed an Active Directory-integrated Manager IIS on another server (or if you cannot access an Active Directory forest at your site), you may decide not to enable Active Directory integration for this installation. For example, if an AD-integrated server is already installed in a protected network and you are installing a second IIS front end in a perimeter zone where Internet access is required to manage external SharePoint Workspace users, the additional front end can be installed without enabling Active Directory integration. If you enable Active Directory integration, enter the following information in the provided fields: User Name: The Active Directory user name. Password: The Active Directory password. Use SSL to help secure communication with Active Directory: Select this option to enable Secure Socket Layer (SSL) protection for Manager IIS and Active Directory communications.

Required server configuration information

Server Configuration Fields	Explanations
Administrator’s E-mail Address	Type the e-mail address of the administrator who is responsible for Groove Server Manager operation. This name may be used in the ‘From’ field of default e-mail messages to SharePoint Workspace clients.
Groove Server Manager URL	Accept the default Universal Resource Locator (URL) for the Groove Server Manager, or change the name. The initial default is the IIS server name. If editing the name, use the format: http://<hostname> where <hostname> is a registered fully qualified DNS or ICANN name of the Manager server. For example: groovemanager.contoso.com. The host name must be resolvable into an IP address. If this value is incorrect, SharePoint Workspace clients will be unable to communicate with Groove Server Manager. In addition, if you intend to manage external SharePoint Workspace users, the URL must be available from the Internet. Note The Groove Server Manager URL is propagated to all clients in your domain. You cannot change this value when the Groove Server Manager is established; changing this value requires you to uninstall and re-install. Then they re-configure all SharePoint Workspace client accounts.
Organizational Affiliation	Type the name of your organization. This name will form the basis of the Groove Server Manager name and the domain name that is used in the Groove Server Manager administrative interface.

Groove Server Manager URL

Note

The Groove Server Manager URL is propagated to all clients in your domain. You cannot change this value when the Groove Server Manager is established; changing this value requires you to uninstall and re-install. Then they re-configure all SharePoint Workspace client accounts.

Organizational Affiliation

Type the name of your organization. This name will form the basis of the Groove Server Manager name and the domain name that is used in the Groove Server Manager administrative interface.

Security information

Security fields	Explanations
Use an existing enterprise PKI system	Select this option to use your corporate PKI system for user authentication. Groove Server Manager policies enable you to restrict users to specified certificates.
Use Groove Manager’s PKI system	Select this option to use the Groove Server Manager PKI system and specify a certification authority (CA) name that meets the following requirements: Is a fully qualified Domain Name System (DNS) name, registered correctly with the DNS authorities. Is unambiguous and unique. The qualified DNS name must describe a third-level domain or better within your organization. Therefore, it must have at least three text blocks (components) and two dots - one dot (.) separating each section, such as groovemanager.contoso.com where: com = Customary DNS generic top-level domain (gTLD) identifier of com for company, net for network, or org for organization. contoso = DNS second-level domain, such as your company name. groovemanager = DNS third-level domain, such as company branch or department. If you are registered in a country-code top-level domain (ccTLD), you may need to use at least four components, separated by three dots. Master Password	Enter and confirm a Master Password for the Groove Server Manager. If you are upgrading or if you are installing an additional front end, enter the existing password. This password is used to encrypt important server data that is stored on SQL Server. Note Do not lose this password because it cannot be restored easily. If you lose your password, contact Microsoft Support. You can change the password on the server Properties page after the Groove Server Manager is installed.

Use an existing enterprise PKI system

Master Password

Enter and confirm a Master Password for the Groove Server Manager. If you are upgrading or if you are installing an additional front end, enter the existing password. This password is used to encrypt important server data that is stored on SQL Server.

Note

Do not lose this password because it cannot be restored easily. If you lose your password, contact Microsoft Support. You can change the password on the server Properties page after the Groove Server Manager is installed.

Once you have installed and set up the Groove Server Manager, test access to the Groove Server Manager Web site, as described in Access the Groove Server Manager administrative Web site.
